Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – Jason Tonelli continued to distance himself from the top goal scorers in the Centennial Conference (CC) with another two markers on Saturday afternoon as the No. 12 Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team overcame a second-half deficit to down McDaniel by a 3-1 tally.
The CC victory improved the Diplomats to 6-0 on the road and 9-1-3, 4-0-1 CC overall as the Green Terror fell to 3-6-2, 0-4-1 CC.
Entering with a 10-game winning streak against McDaniel, F&M struggled to generate offense through the opening 45 minutes of action. The Diplomats led the shot count at 5-3 but entered the break with a 0-0 tie.
Just one minute into the second half, the Green Terror struck first when a Raul Escobar cross found Pat Palin for the 1-0 lead.
The score held until the 63rd minute. F&M finally got on the scoreboard by taking advantage of a costly Green Terror foul, and Jeremy Levine placed a free kick opportunity into the back of the net, to even the game at 1-1.
Tonelli followed with back-to-back goals in a three-minute timeframe, first off a Ryan Fincher pass in the 71st minute and then dribbling through a pair of defenders in the 74th for his CC-leading 9th and 10th scores of the season.
Dave Reingold (9-1-3) earned the win in net after turning back one attempt through 90 minutes. Nick Over (3-6-2) suffered the loss after registering two saves and allowing three goals.
After their slow first-half start, the Diplomats' offense picked up the pace in the second, leading in shots by an 8-2 margin. F&M owned the shot count at 13-5 overall while corners were tied at 4-4.
Tonelli led the way with five shots; Ben Draheim tallied three and Levine followed with two.
The Diplomats look to continue a four-game win streak by welcoming Johns Hopkins to Tylus on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
