AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Eric Bateman dominated on the mound in a 1-0 victory, while Franklin & Marshall's baseball team couldn't dig itself out of an early hole en route to a 5-3 loss in the nightcap of a doubleheader split against William Patterson on Monday in Florida.

The results brought the Diplomats' record to 5-5 on the season while the Pioneers moved to 6-4. 

Bateman (1-1) got the start in game one and was brilliant, tossing six shutout innings and allowing only one hit while striking out four. Andrew Mascis entered in the ninth and pitched out of a one-out, runner-on-second jam to earn his second save of the season. 

Mascis now has 11 career saves, while places him first on the program's all-time list. The sophomore closer passed Dan Tischler, who held the record since 2008. 

The Diplomats' lone run came in the top of the fourth when back-to-back singles from David Iacobucci and Mike Smeriglio loaded the bases with one out. Matt Mezansky reached on a fielder's choice that plated Luke Seib from third for what proved to be the winning run.

In game two, William Patterson jumped out in front with four runs on three hits in the top of the first. The Diplomats answered with a pair of runs off four hits in the bottom of the frame, which included an RBI single up the middle from Smeriglio and an RBI double to left field by Mezansky. 

F&M pulled within one in the third when Iacobucci led off with a double to left field and Smeriglio sent him across the place with an RBI single in the next at-bat. The one-run defecit was short lived as William Patterson added a run of its own in the top of the fourth off a two-out RBI single to left center to make it a 5-3 game. The Diplomats failed to threaten throughout the final three frames. 

Starting pitcher Sam Ackerman (0-1) was dealt the loss after allowing four earned off seven hits in four innings of work. Eric Rosenberg (1-0) came out of the bullpen to toss 2 1/3 shutout innings to secure the win for the Pioneers. 

Reed Williams (2-for-3), Iacobucci (2-for-4), Smeriglio (2-for-3) and Mezansky (2-for-3) each notched a pair of F&M's 10 hits.

The Diplomats continue their spring break trip tomorrow with a matchup against No. 15 Ramapo at 12:30 p.m.
