Bateman Tosses Gem as Diplomats Dominate Presidents

Box Score

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Starting pitcher Eric Bateman stymied the Washington & Jefferson offense with a dominant outing as Franklin & Marshall's baseball team concluded its spring break trip to Florida with a 7-1 win on Sunday morning.

The Diplomats return to Lancaster with a 6-8 overall record, while the Presidents fell to 4-3.

Bateman went seven innings to improve to 2-1, allowing only four hits, one earned run and striking out seven. Daniel Blugis and Andrew Mascis both tossed a shutout inning out of the bullpen to finish off the effort.

David Iacobucci jumpstarted the offense in the top of the first by hitting a two-run homer to left field that sent Jimmy Whelan across the plate and gave F&M an early 2-0 lead. The score held until the bottom of the sixth when Washington & Jefferson answered with a sacrifice fly RBI, cutting the deficit to one.

The Diplomats' offense tacked on in each of the next three frames to put the game out of reach. Casey Bulik notched an RBI single in the seventh; Christopher Vincent followed with an RBI single of his own in the eighth and Matt Mezansky wrapped up the scoring with a bases-clearing three-RBI double down the leftfield line in the ninth.

Mezansky continues to be one of F&M's top run generators to this point in the season as the senior third baseman now has 14 RBIs in 2016, giving him 85 for his career and placing him eighth on the program's all-time list.

The top of the order was stellar for the Diplomats with the No.'s 1-3 hitters combining for an 8-for-14 effort, three RBIs, and four runs scored.

Whelan tallied a 2-for-5 line from the leadoff spot; Bulik went 3-for-4 hitting second, and Iacobucci produced a 3-for-5 line batting third. Mezansky and Vincent both notched a pair of F&M's 14 hits on the day.

The Diplomats open a seven-game home stand on Tuesday when F&M welcomes Arcadia to Caplan Field for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
