Glavin, Bulik Delivers For F&M

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – A solid performance from starting pitcher Mack Glavin and a go-ahead single from Casey Bulik in the seventh delivered the Franklin & Marshall baseball team a key 3-2 Centennial Conference (CC) win over Ursinus on Tuesday afternoon at Caplan Field.

The Diplomats improved to 12-14, 3-4 CC with the victory while the Bears fell to 15-11, 1-4 CC.

Glavin (2-2) tossed 7 1/3 innings, allowing two earned off nine hits and striking out three. The junior righty pitched himself out of jams throughout, including the opening frame that came to a close off a groundout to second with runners on the corners.

Reliever Gareth Fancher finished out the eighth after forcing a double play, and closer Andrew Mascis put Ursinus' hitters down in order for a perfect ninth to capture his sixth save of the season.

Knotted at 2-2 in the seventh, Dan Marano led off with a pinch-hit single to left field. Brian Meerholz pinch ran for Marano and swiped second to put a runner in scoring position with no outs on the board. Following a walk by Tyler Daley, Bulik stepped to the plate and laced a single to right field that sent Meerholz across home for the 3-2 advantage.

F&M began the scoring in the bottom of the third. Daley singled to left and stole second; Bulik drew a walk and David Iacobucci followed with a two-out single up the middle for the 1-0 lead. The Bears answered in the fifth with two runs on four hits to go ahead 2-1, but the inning came to an end with runners on the corners after a groundout bunt to Glavin.

Jimmy Whelan led off the bottom of the fifth with an infield single and advanced to second on a wild throw from the shortstop. Daley's sacrifice bunt moved him to third with one out, and Bulik sent a sacrifice fly to right field that made it a 2-2 game.

Sean Pisak (4-2) was sharp for Ursinus in the loss, registering 7 1/3 innings, allowing two earned off eight hits and striking out four.

Eighth Diplomats recorded a hit including Bulik, who tallied a 1-2 line with two RBIs. F&M turned three double plays on the day without committing an error in the field. Christopher Jablonski (2-for-2) and Jay Farrwell (2-for-4) paced the Bears at the plate, who managed to outhit the Diplomats by a 9-8 margin.

F&M returns to the field on Friday, traveling to face Ursinus at 3:30 p.m.
