F&M Earns Split Against No. 24 McDaniel

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's baseball team began Centennial Conference (CC) play on Sunday at Caplan Field, dropping a 6-2 contest in game one of a doubleheader against No. 24 McDaniel, before snapping the Green Terror's 12-game winning streak with a 6-3 win in the nightcap.

The Diplomats moved to 10-11, 1-1 CC with the pair of decisions while McDaniel now sits at 20-2, 1-1 CC.

Game one saw the Green Terror jump out to a controlling 6-0 lead after tallying a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. F&M responded in the bottom of the frame when a Jimmy Whelan groundout to second sent Tyler Daley home from third before three straight singles were capped off with a Matt Mezansky RBI hit through the right side to pull the Diplomats within four.

F&M threatened at times through the remaining innings but was unable to cut into the deficit any further, despite outhitting McDaniel by a 13-9 margin in the contest.

Starting pitcher Eric Bateman (2-2) was charged with the loss after allowing three earned in six innings of work. Zach Kronick (5-0) picked up the win, striking out seven and allowing two earned off 12 hits in seven innings.

David Iacobucci (3-for-5) and Luke Seib (3-for-4) paced the Diplomats' offense while Daley went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

In game two, McDaniel used a two-out, two-RBI double to left field to take an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. The score held until the bottom of the third when F&M went out in front by tallying three runs off four hits.

With two outs on the board, Iacobucci singled to left center, scoring Whelan from third. Mezansky followed with an RBI double to left, and Seib closed out the scoring with an RBI single to right center.

A Dan Marano RBI single in the top of the fifth, followed by an Iacobucci RBI triple and a Mezansky sacrifice fly in the sixth, padded F&M's lead at 6-2. The Green Terror cut it to three in the seventh when Marty Windish notched an RBI single up the middle. However, with runners on the corners and two outs in the books, McDaniel went down swinging to end the threat.

Iacobucci carried over his hot hitting from game one with a 3-for-5 effort to go along with two RBIs and three runs scored. Whelan recorded a 2-for-3 line with two runs scored from the leadoff position and Seib went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Starter Mike Androconis (3-2) was clutch, tossing seven innings and allowing three earned off nine hits while striking out four. Relievers Gareth Fancher and Andrew Mascis both threw a scoreless frame, with Mascis registering his fourth save of the year.

CC Competition continues Tuesday when the Diplomats travel to Gettysburg for a 3:30 p.m. matchup.
