Diplomats Draw With Shoremen

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – A gut-wrenching pair of overtimes and 110 total minutes of play failed to produce a winner as Franklin & Marshall's No. 6 men's soccer team was forced to settle for a 1-1 2OT draw against Washington on Saturday evening at Tylus Field.

The Centennial Conference (CC) tilt moved the Diplomats to 5-1-3, 1-0-1 CC on the year while the Shoremen now sit at 3-4-1, 1-0-1 CC.

Robert Maze tallied F&M's lone goal in the 38th minute of the opening half. Ryan Fincher sent a corner into the box that was headed off the post by Wyatt Fabian. After bouncing off the turf, the ball landed on the head of Maze, who tallied his first career goal with a strike from the right side.

Washington answered in the tail end of the second stanza on a bizarre goal that once again was the result of a corner kick opportunity. Dimitri Kaliakin took the corner on the near side of the field and sent a ball into the box that was originally deflected by goalkeeper Dave Reingold

The ball then knocked off the back of Chris Lewandowski's head before ricocheting once again off a Diplomat defender and finally settling into the back of the net.

Overtime number one failed to generate much action. Jason Tonelli had the best chance four minutes in, sending a 40-yard attempt on the right side that was aimed at the far post but narrowly missed to the left.

The Shoremen had the first opportunity in the opening minutes of the second overtime stanza when a Kaliakin free kick appeared destined for the top-left corner of the goal but sailed just wide.

Momentum was on the Diplomats' side from that point forward. With three minutes on the clock Ryan Fincher settled a long ball in the top-right of the box and aimed a kick at the top of the goal, but Washington's 'keeper managed to get a hand on the scoring chance with a sprawling stop.

Both goalies played an outstanding 110 minutes, with Reingold (5-1-3) and Josh Samuels (3-4-1) registering three saves each.

Shots favored F&M at 14-11, as well as corners at 13-4. Jeremy Levine led the way with three shots, while Ugo Okolie, Cole Niggeman, and Maze tallied two apiece.

CC competition continues on Wednesday when the Diplomats travel to Ursinus for a 7:30 p.m. game.
