Diplomats Fall to Frostburg

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall dropped a hard-fought game, 9-8, to Frostburg in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats fell to 0-2 on the season while the Bobcats improved to 1-1.

F&M took the early edge when Sean Rogers found Mike Rama at 13:14 for a 1-0 lead. Frostburg countered with three straight to close out the first quarter and took a 3-1 lead into the second. Rogers connected with Shane McBride just 49 seconds into the second to bring F&M within a goal, 3-2, but the Bobcats answered again with two straight and went into the break with a 5-2 advantage.

The Diplomats came out strong in the second and netted two early goals to make it a one-goal game, 5-4, at 11:37. George Briggs found McBride for the first tally and Rama fed Jarrett Donaghy for the second score at 11:37. Tornadoes in the area forced a delay of more than two-and-half hours.

After the delay, Frostburg netted two straight to finish the third and took a 7-4 lead into the final frame.

The Diplomats started the fourth out strong and scored three goals to tie the game at 7-7 with nine minutes left to play. George Briggs hooked up with Kevin Mollihan to start the run and Briggs struck unassisted 22 seconds later to bring F&M within a goal, 7-6, at 12:41. Ellis Llewellyn found Rama at 9:00 to tie the game. The Bobcats countered with two goals and took a 9-7 lead at 1:34.

Mollihan fed Briggs with 42 ticks on the clock to bring F&M within a point, 9-8, and the Diplomats took the final possession, but were unable to find the net as time expired.

Anthony Dougherty caused three turnovers and collected four ground balls to pace the defense and Tommy O'Connor record two caused turnovers.

Scott Hatch took the loss and dropped to 0-2 with three stops while Jack Mark improved to 1-1 for the Bobcats with 10 saves.

F&M outshot Frostburg 45-19, held a 24-17 edge in ground balls and went 11-for-12 on clear attempts.

The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday when F&M hosts Susquehanna at 4:00 p.m.
