Daylight Runs Out on F&M Comeback Bid

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's baseball team stormed all the way back from a six-run deficit to take a one-run lead in the top of the eighth, however, the frame was unable to be completed due to darkness, forcing the score to revert back to the end of the seventh inning and resulting in a tough 9-6 loss (7 innings) against Arcadia on Tuesday.

The Diplomats dropped to 1-4 with the non-conference decision in Philadelphia while the Knights improved to 4-1.

Trailing by an 8-2 score in the fourth, F&M began to mount a comeback with a four-run frame that pulled the Diplomats within two. A Kevin Lammers walk, followed by a Casey Bulik single, put runners on first and second with one out. Jimmy Whelan lined a bases-clearing triple to center field, and Max Schwartz notched a RBI single to right center later in the frame, to round out the scoring.

The 8-6 tally held until the bottom of the seventh when Arcadia's Luke Hohenstein opened with a triple to center before a sacrifice fly brought him home from third and extended the F&M deficit to three.

In the top of the eighth, a Dan Marano single, followed by back-to-back walks loaded the bases with one out. Tyler Daley stepped to the dish and registered a two-RBI single to right field before Reed Williams and Kyle Ebert each recorded RBI singles of their own to put the Diplomats ahead by a 10-9 score.

However, the game was called due to darkness before the bottom of the eighth inning began, meaning the statistics and four runs scored by F&M in the top of the frame had to be cleared.

Hits were even at 10-0. Christopher Vincent and Bulik each went 2-for-4 while Daley put together a 1-for-2 line with two walks and one run scored. Designated hitter Nick Cardace tallied a 2-for-4 line with three RBIs to lead the Knights batters.

Starter Jonathan Cole (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing four earned on six hits and three walks while striking out two. Reliever Zach Manasek (1-0) picked up the win with 1 2/3 shutout innings out of the bullpen.

F&M returns to action on Sunday, opening its Florida spring break trip with a doubleheader against Fitchburg St., beginning at 9:30 a.m.
