LEXINGTON, Va. – Franklin & Marshall's No. 6 men's soccer team rallied with an 88th-minute goal to force overtime and eventually tie No. 24 Washington & Lee by a 2-2 2OT score on Sunday afternoon on the road.
The Diplomats moved to 2-1-1 on the season while the Generals now sit at 3-0-1.
Trailing by a 2-1 score in the final minutes of regulation, a Janse Schermerhorn cross into the box careened off a General defender for the own goal. Each team traded chances in the opening overtime with shots deadlocked at 2-2 following the 10-minute stanza. W&L came out firing in the second overtime period with a pair of chances early on, but goalkeeper Sebastian Jenkins picked up a pair of key saves to sustain the tie.
More than 40 minutes of game time elapsed until either defense relented in regulation. F&M got the scoring started in the 41st minute when Connor Whitacre played a through play at the top of the box to Stephen Sherbahn, who struck in the lower corner of the goal for the 1-0 edge.
W&L came out of the halftime break with a pair of scores in the opening 20 minutes, capitalizing on two corner opportunities to pull in front by one.
Jenkins remained unbeaten during his freshman year with a 2-0-1 record in net after registering four saves. Gillen Beck (3-0-1) turned back two opportunities in 110 minutes.
The shot count favored W&L by an 18-10 margin, including a 5-2 edge in the overtime periods. Corners were also led by the Generals at 10-4. Ryan Fincher and Jim Connolly led F&M with two shots each.
The Diplomats return to the pitch on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. for the annual Smith-Herr Boot Game against Elizabethtown at Tylus Field.
