F&M Clinches No. 2 Seed for CC Tournament

Box Score

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall's baseball team handled Ursinus by a 5-2 score on Sunday in Lancaster, clinching the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Centennial Conference (CC) Tournament with the win.

The Diplomats (26-13, 12-6 CC) head into the Playoffs as one of the Conference's hottest teams, having won 10 out of their last 12 games while the Bears saw their season come to a close at 18-18, 7-11 CC.

On Thursday, F&M is set to open the Tournament at home against No. 3 seed Haverford. Game time will be decided on Tuesday and will be made available at GoDiplomats.com.

Jonathan Cole (6-2) got the win with four shutout innings that included six strikeouts. He did not surrender a hit in his outing and allowed only one walk. F&M took a committee approach on Sunday with relievers Don DiLoreto, Ryan DeWalt and Danny Blugis combining to throw the final five frames.

The majority of the Diplomats' scoring occurred in the bottom of the first with fours runs off of three hits, including a Matthew Kann RBI single to left field, and Blugis's two-RBI double down the right field line that plated Will Samuel and Kann.

Ahead by a 4-0 score, F&M added on in the fourth when DiLoreto picked up the sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to extend the Diplomat lead to five.

Ursinus made it a 5-1 game with an RBI double in the top of the seventh and added an RBI double to left field in the ninth to pull within three. However, Blugis closed out the contest by striking out the final Bears' batter to end the threat.

F&M totaled eight hits on the afternoon with Alex Miller leading the charge off a 2-for-4 line at the plate. Justin Cavegn also tallied a 2-for-4 effort with a run scored, while DiLoreto went 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
