Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. -- Franklin & Marshall used solid play from start to finish to polish off a 73-59 victory over Lycoming in its home opener in the Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic on Saturday evening. The Diplomats (2-0) scored 24 points off 25 Warrior turnovers en route to victory over Lycoming (0-2).
F&M got off to a slow start, falling behind 10-5 with 4:46 remaining in the first quarter. The Diplomats closed the gap to one on a pair of D'Naisha Bellamy-Greene free throws with 2:24 left, then took the lead at 17-16 on a layup by the junior guard as time expired.
The teams exchanged buckets to start the second quarter leading to a 20-20 deadlock, before a 14-1 run punctuated by back-to-back Natalie Kolb three-pointers gave F&M a 34-21 lead with 3:03 remaining in the half. That lead held for much of the second quarter, but a quick 4-0 spurt to finish the stanza cut F&M's edge to 37-31 at the break.
The third quarter brought a see-saw feel to the game, as the teams went tit-for-tat with virtually every bucket being followed by one of the opposing side. A Kenna Williams layup with 1:12 remaining, followed by 1-2 at the line pushed F&M's lead to 51-40. A late buzzer beater by Lycoming cut the lead to single digits at 51-42 entering the fourth.
An 11-1 run to open the fourth quarter put things out of reach, once again led by four points from Kolb, then a triple from Maia Lockhart for a 62-44 lead with 5:28 left. The lead ballooned to 20 with 4:24 remaining on a Kennedy Wilburn jumper. Lycoming chipped a bit off the lead, with half of the effort coming on a three-pointer with five seconds left to finish 73-59.
F&M held a 42.6% to 40% edge from the field, including hitting 6-11 from beyond the arc. The Diplomats dominated again on the boards by a 42-31 margin, leading to an 18-11 edge in second chance points. The difference came off of turnovers, as F&M capitalized on 25 Warrior cough-ups to the tune of a 24-8 edge in points.
Kenna Williams led the way with 15 points, while Natalie Kolb ended with 14 and D'Naisha Bellamy-Greene finished with 13. Jaclyn Feit picked up nine rebounds off the bench, while Kennedy Wilburn had a solid night with nine points and eight rebounds.
The Diplomats continue their home stretch tomorrow afternoon against Elizabethtown to finish off the Terry Green Tip-Off Classic at 3:00 pm in the Mayser Center.
