Women's Basketball Overtaken Late vs. Elizabethtown, 59-53

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall women's basketball team suffered its first setback of the 2021-22 season on Sunday during the de facto championship game of the Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic. The Diplomats led throughout much of the afternoon, but were overtaken late in the 59-53 defeat against Elizabethtown.

Kenna Williams was named to the All-Tournament Team following a 14 point, 10 rebound double-double performance. She was joined in double figures by Natalie Kolb who finished with 12 points. The Diplomats dominated the boards with a 46-37 advantage in rebounding, but could not overcome the Blue Jays' 18 free throws made at the line in 22 attempts. On the contrary, the Diplomats made just eight trips to the charity stripe.

F&M scored the first eight points of Sunday's game and led for the rest of the time during that opening period. Elizabethtown only led briefly during the first half before the game was eventually tied at 19-all midway through the second quarter. F&M closed the half strong with a 13 of the final 17 points and held a 30-23 advantage at the half.

That lead was extended into double figures during the third quarter and grew to as many as 13 points, 48-35, with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation time. This time it was the Blue Jays that closed out the half strong as they went on a 17-0 run during the fourth quarter to take a 52-48 lead before Kolb's triple ended that extended run. Despite getting back to within a point, Elizabethtown's suffocating defense held the Diplomats without a basket during their final seven attempts from the field in the 59-53 final.

Women's basketball will now have six days to prepare for the start of Centennial Conference action as the Diplomats and Washington College tip-off their conference slates next Saturday at 1 p.m. inside the Mayser Center. That contest will mark the third of four straight home games for Franklin & Marshall.
