Monos's Olympico Wins Boot Game

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. -- A 72nd minute "olympico" from Phillip Monos gave Frankin & Marshall its third straight victory in the annual "Boot" game against Elizabethtown in a 1-0 win on Saturday evening. The Diplomat victory gave them their third straight 1-0 final, pushing their record to 3-0 to start the season. The loss was the Blue Jays' first of the year, as they drop to 2-1.

It was a feisty start to the game between these two rivals, as the two sides combined for eight fouls and a yellow card on the opposing keeper before the clock hit the 12th minute of play. F&M had the best chance early, as A.J. Kopacz was able to put a header on frame, but was saved handily. Sam Altman Farrell made two stops in the 19th and 25th minutes, the only two times he was called upon in the entire match. Shay Adamson had a shot from distance in the 37th minute, but didn't provide much problem for the Blue Jays backstop.

It took until the 72nd minute, but the lone goal of the game was worth the wait for the 600+ F&M fans in attendance. After his first corner was knocked away over the endline, Phillip Monos had a second chance to make good. His high, bending corner kick from the far sideline snuck through the Elizabethtown defense and goalkeeper into the top right corner for a 1-0 lead.

The Diplomats nearly made it a 2-0 advantage in the 82nd, as a handball just outside the box gave Carl Friedrich a chance to step up and curl his free kick attempt around the wall. His bending attempt cleared the wall, but required a diving stop to keep it a 1-0 F&M victory.

The win was F&M's third consecutive against Elizabethtown in the Smith-Herr Boot game, and the ninth time a 1-0 scoreline has decided the Boot.

Sam Altman Farrell required only two first-half saves for his third consecutive shutout victory of the season.

Shay Adamson and Phillip Monos led the team with three shots apiece. A.J. Kopacz and Carl Friedrich both had a pair.

A short turnaround awaits the Diplomats, as they travel to our state capital to face Penn State-Harrisburg on Tuesday afternoon - a rematch of F&M's 2019 NCAA First Round appearance which saw the Diplomats emerge victorious by a 1-0 final.
