Box Score YORK, Pa. – After a lightning delay with 7:50 to play in the third quarter and a 1-1 tie game pushed the majority of the second half into Thursday evening, York (5-0) took control and came away with the game winner in overtime against the No. 6 Diplomats (2-2).
F&M had taken a 1-0 lead during the second quarter shortly after the Diplomats earned a penalty corner. The first shot from Maddie Bickel was initially stopped by the York goalie, but Carolina Riley was there for the rebound to put her side up 1-0. Riley's goal was the second of her season after the sophomore also tallied during F&M's season-opening 4-1 victory against FDU-Florham.
Both teams had recorded eight shots in the contest before the game was suspended. However, the Diplomats put the York goalie under much more pressure as they held a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal in addition to a slight 5-4 edge in penalty corners. Nevertheless, York scored within the final minute of game action before the suspension of play as Maggie Spadafora's unassisted goal knotted the match at one during the 37th minute of action.
After resuming play on Thursday evening, York immediately took control, outshooting the Diplomats 9-1 through overtime. F&M held off a flurry of shots from York at the end of the 4th quarter, as two shots were blocked before a third went wide in the span of 1:03.
Sydney Lippe came up large in overtime, turning away another three shots from the Spartans in the first 3:30 of the stanza. But York's continued pressure finally broke through just over a minute later for the 2-1 final.
Amelia McCarthy, Maddie Bickel, Jessica Miller, and Sophie Carroll all took a pair of shots for the Diplomats. Sydney Lippe made four stops in net for F&M.
The Diplomats have little time to waste before they're back on the field again - a Saturday matchup against Lebanon Valley awaits at Tylus Field at noon before traveling to our nation's capital to face Catholic on Sunday.
