Diplomats Erupt For 19-0 Shutout Over TCNJ

Box Score

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- Franklin & Marshall erupted for 19 runs while tossing a combined two-hit shutout in a 19-0 seven inning victory over TCNJ in non-conference baseball action on Friday afternoon. The Diplomats (6-6) plated seven in the first two innings, then another twelve across the fourth to sixth to cruise to victory over the Lions (3-5).

F&M got started early, as a Spencer Berson single followed by an AJ Desautels double put ducks on the pond with no one out. Consecutive groundouts to short by Bobby Falese and Jakob Hoffman plated two for a 2-0 lead.

The Diplomats tacked on five more in the second, as back-to-back doubles by Pat Elliott and Michael Cole added one, then a Spencer Berson grand slam to left on a 1-0 count wiped the bases clean for a 7-0 lead.

F&M scored another in the fourth, as Patrick Cettina smacked an RBI single through the left side for an 8-0 advantage.

The Diplomats exploded for seven more in the fifth inning, continuing an aggressive approach early in counts. F&M loaded the bases with none down, plating one on a Berson sac fly, another on an AJ Desautels double, then a two-RBI single up the gut from Falese. A mid-inning pitching change did little to affect the Diplomats as three more touched home on a Will Samuel single, a Michael Cole single, and Drew Butera reaching on an error.

Leading 15-0, Andrew Fillippelli added to the advantage with an RBI single down the right field line in the sixth, followed by Harrison Otto rounding for home on a fielding error. Cole and Butera polished off the Diplomat scoring with a pair of two-out, RBI singles to round out the 19-0 final.

During this time, Kyle Roche was tossing an absolute gem for the Diplomats with six innings of two hit, nine strikeout baseball. Dan Galef finished the game with a two punch-out performance in the seventh.

Spencer Berson knocked in five in a 3-4 performance, while Michael Cole impressed with a 5-5, three RBI afternoon. AJ Desautels also reeled off a trio of hits, including a pair of doubles. Bobby Falese knocked in three of his own, making it 13 RBI in his last six games in Florida.

F&M rounds out its spring break trip with a doubleheader against Hamilton on Saturday, with 9:15 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. starts.
