Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. -- Franklin & Marshall baseball uncorked four home runs in an 18-5 victory over Lancaster Bible in non-conference action. Spencer Berson, Bobby Falese, Jakob Hoffman, and Will Samuel all went yard for the Diplomats (7-8) against the Chargers (7-10).
F&M's four round-trippers are the most since 2013, when the Diplomats launched four home runs in the second inning and five home runs overall in a 16-1 victory over Johns Hopkins in the Centennial Conference Championship.
After giving up an unearned run in the first, Bobby Falese unloaded a three-run blast over the left field wall that brought up Spencer Berson and AJ Desautels for a 3-1 lead.
The Chargers answered with an RBI single in the second, loading the bases with one away against newly inserted pitcher Jason Schulman. F&M did well to keep Lancaster Bible at bay, as Schulman scooped a weakly hit grounder back to the catcher for a force out, then struck out the final batter of the inning for a 3-2 edge.
F&M turned the game on its head, as a double steal by Spencer Berson and Drew Butera put ducks on the pond with two outs. Bobby Falese took one off the helmet to load the bases, and Jakob Hoffman promptly emptied the bases with a grand slam for a 7-2 lead.
Will Samuel got in on the homer parade with a solo shot in the fourth to extend the advantage to 8-2.
A Berson sac fly in the fifth added another, bringing home Butera who reached as part of a sequence where back-to-back batters reached first after the first baseman was off the bag.
The Diplomats erupted for six more in the sixth, as Pat Elliott doubled home Samuel for a 10-2 margin. Tommy Denlinger followed two batters later with a two RBI single to left for a 12-2 lead. Spencer Berson wiped the slate clean with another bomb to left, bringing three more runs across the plate for a 15-2 advantage.
Three more crossed in the seventh, as an Evan Varga single brought home Falese, then Varga touched home on a Butera sacrifice to center. Harrison Otto added an RBI single for good measure and an 18-2 lead.
Lancaster Bible tacked on three in the ninth for the 18-5 final.
Spencer Berson and Jakob Hoffman each finished with multi-hit games and four RBI, while Bobby Falese finished 2-5 with three RBI. Tommy Denlinger raised his batting average with a 3-4, two RBI performance.
Jason Schulman (1-0) earned his first career win, tossing five innings of one-run, nine strikeout ball in relief of starter Brooks Rush. Rush finished with an inning pitched, allowing zero hits and an unearned run. Shane Rebane and Noah Jordan combined for two innings of scoreless relief.
F&M takes a day off before travelling to Reading, Pa. for a doubleheader matchup against Albright on Saturday afternoon beginning at noon.
