Box Score ANNVILLE, Pa. -- Franklin & Marshall baseball won a barnburner against Lebanon Valley on Sunday afternoon, using a seven-run second inning to take control in a 17-11 win on the road. The Diplomats (9-8) took advantage of seven Dutchmen (11-8) errors in the victory, plating seven unearned runs in the process.
A hint of what was to come started in the top of the first, as AJ Desautels doubled with one out, advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt, then scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead.
LVC answered in the bottom half, knocking around Diplomat starter Kyle Roche with a pair of RBI singles, followed by a two-run homer to take a 4-1 lead.
F&M took the lead for good in the following frame, putting the first two batters on as Drew Butera hit a single to short and Patrick Elliott was plunked. Tommy Denlinger laced a single through the left side to score Butera to slice the lead to 4-2. Spencer Berson picked up an RBI on a throwing error by the second baseman, scoring both Denlinger and Elliott to knot the game.
AJ Desautels worked a walk to put another runner on, then stole second to put ducks on the pond. Bobby Falese singled both runners home for a 6-4 lead. After Jakob Hoffman was drilled by a pitch, his attempted steal of second sent a throw into center field which scored Falese for a 7-4 edge. Michael Cole's groundout to third scored Hoffman for a four run cushion.
Things settled down until the fifth, as Denlinger again answered the call with a double to right which scored one, then touched home himself on a Spencer Berson single to right. The Dutchmen responded with two in the bottom half to keep it a four run game at 10-6.
The Diplomats tacked on three more in the sixth, as Jakob Hoffman doubled to left center to bring home Desautels for a 11-6 lead. Will Samuel promptly welcomed a relief pitcher into the game with a two run RBI to left for a 13-6 edge. LVC worked back three runs in the bottom half to, yet again, keep things just four runs apart.
Drew Butera added two more runs on a two-RBI single up the gut for a 15-9 lead in the seventh. A pair of sacrifice flies by the Dutchmen pulled it back to 15-11.
AJ Desautels scored again in the ninth after once again reeking havoc on the basepaths. The first-year second baseman singled to right, advanced to third on a failed pickoff, then scored on a wild pitch that walked Bobby Falese. Falese then came around to score on another throwing error from the catcher for the 17-11 final margin.
AJ Desautels led the Diplomats with a 4-5, four run effort at the dish. Spencer Berson had a stellar afternoon, going 3-6 with two RBI - while Bobby Falese, Will Samuel, Drew Butera, and Tommy Denlinger all drove in a pair of runs to join Berson.
Thomas McLaughlin (2-1) picked up the victory, tossing four innings of two-run baseball in relief of starter Kyle Roche. Bijan Anvar tossed 2.2 hitless innings, giving up two runs (one earned), while Brooks Rush punched out two in the ninth to seal the victory.
F&M has little time to rest, as the Diplomats return home for a non-conference tilt against Elizabethtown on Tuesday beginning at 3:30 p.m.
