Box Score CARLISLE, Pa. -- A day after hitting five homers, Franklin & Marshall used small-ball to beat Dickinson on the road in an 8-2 Centennial Conference (CC) victory. The Diplomats (16-10, 7-0 CC) crossed home five times in the fifth to pull away from the Red Devils (15-11, 3-4 CC), who will face F&M again on Friday at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
After both teams threatened with runners on third in the second inning, it took until the fourth for the Diplomats to kick off the scoring. F&M loaded the bases after AJ Desautels and Jakob Hoffman both singled, and Patrick Cettina walked. Desautels scampered home on a passed ball that went in and out of the glove of the Red Devils' catcher for a 1-0 lead.
F&M broke things open in the fifth, loading the bases with just one away on a trio of walks. Bobby Falese continued his torried pace of driving in runners, smacking a two-run single to give the sophomore 37 RBI on the year. The mark now ranks 12th in Diplomat history, just a dozen behind the all-time leader.
The Diplomats reloaded the bases as Hoffman was plunked in the ensuing at-bat. After Desautels was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice to the first baseman, another passed ball scored Falese for a 4-0 lead. Patrick Cettina dropped a single to left to plate two more for a 6-0 advantage.
F&M tacked on another an inning later, as Tommy Denlinger hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Evan Varga to make it 7-0.
Dickinson finally got in on the action in the bottom half of the sixth, plating two to trim the lead to 7-2.
Cettina notched his second RBI single of the day just a frame later, scoring Hoffman for the 8-2 final.
Bijan Anvar and Zach Masnikoff combined for three innings of one-hit relief to close out the game for the Diplomats.
Dan Galef (1-0) continued his light-out pitching, picking up his first career victory after throwing five innings and allowing just two hits while punching out four. It now marks 14 consecutive scoreless innings for the first-year righty, allowing just three hits across those frames.
Jakob Hoffman stayed hot at the dish, going 3-for-4 a day with a pair of doubles after a 4-for-4, two homer effort the day before. Patrick Cettina finished with two hits, driving in three. AJ Desautels also managed a multi-hit game while tacking on a stolen base.
The Diplomats now prepare to host the Red Devils at Clipper Magazine Stadium, home of the Atlantic League's Lancaster Barnstormers on Friday afternoon beginning at 3:30 p.m.
