Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. -- Franklin & Marshall plated runners in six separate innings, including a five-run second, to remain undefeated in Centennial Conference (CC) play in an 11-9 win over Dickinson on Friday afternoon at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The Diplomats (17-10, 8-0 CC) received base-knocks from the entirety of their lineup and seven innings of relief from Charlie Wright in the win over the Red Devils (15-12, 3-5 CC).
Dickinson got on the board early, as the wind going from left to right played a major factor in watching a destined foul ball drop just inside the left field line, then a single that died in shallow left field gave the Red Devils a 1-0 lead.
That same wind gave Spencer Berson a boost with an opposite field solo shot that carried over the fence to knot the game at 1-1.
Dickinson had a carbon copy of Berson's homer in the next frame, watching what seemed to be a fairly routine fly ball catch wind and deposit onto the tent in right field for a 2-1 lead. A two-RBI double extended the Red Devils' lead to 4-1. Pat Elliott's arm saved another run, gunning down a runner at home for the third out of the inning.
F&M answered in the bottom half, as Dickinson's center fielder misjudged a lofted ball that carried over his head to put Pat Elliott on second. Berson brought Elliott home on a sacrifice fly to narrow the margin to 4-2. The Diplomats then worked some two-out magic as Bobby Falese, Jakob Hoffman, and Will Samuel all smacked RBI base hits to score four more runners to snag a 6-4 lead.
Two more Dickinson runners crossed the dish in the top of the third to tie things at 6-6. Spencer Berson quickly responded with a second sac-fly to left, scoring Drew Butera for a 7-6 edge in the bottom of the frame.
The Diplomats scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, as Michael Cole hit an RBI single back up the middle that was knocked down by the pitcher into empty space for an 8-6 lead. Berson followed in the fifth with his third sacrifice of the day to tack on another.
Charlie Wright's relief performance helped steady the Diplomats, as the senior allowed just a solo shot in the seventh after a shaky entry in the game in the third. Wright tossed three straight 1-2-3 innings, then retired the next three batters after the homer.
F&M answered with the lineup turning over as the eight-hitter Drew Butera smacked an RBI double to center, then leadoff hitter Spencer Berson followed with his fifth RBI of the day just two batters later to extend the Diplomat lead to 11-7.
The Red Devils managed to put the tying run at the dish, loading the bases in the eighth. Wright was able to twirl his way out of danger, allowing a sacrifice fly, then getting a roll-over groundout to second to close the frame. Going back to the mound to loud applause to close out the game in the ninth, Wright was greeted with another solo shot to right that close the F&M lead to 11-9. The Seattle-native got a fly-out, strike-out looking, and another fly-out to center to finish the game.
All nine F&M starters recorded hits, led by Spencer Berson's 2-for-2, five RBI outing. Jakob Hoffman stayed hot with three hits and two RBI to extend his hitting streak to seven games. Bobby Falese, Will Samuel, and Drew Butera all finished with a pair of hits.
Charlie Wright (2-1) picked up the win, tossing seven innings in relief of starter Stephen Turzai. Wright allowed four runs while punching out two.
F&M continues its CC play tomorrow afternoong, facing off against Johns Hopkins beginning at noon in Baltimore.
