Box Score YORK, Pa. -- Leading 9-5 after the top of the fourth, Franklin & Marshall gave up 15 of the next 17 runs to York to ultimately fall 20-11 in non-conference baseball action. The Diplomats (11-10) plated seven in the third to chase York's (11-11) starter, but only one F&M pitcher came out unscathed the rest of the way.
F&M needed just two batters to get on the board, as Spencer Berson tripled to open the contest, and Will Samuel grounded out to second for a 1-0 lead. Bobby Falese followed with a double, but was stranded on third to end the inning.
York followed by plating five in the bottom half of the first, working back-to-back walks to start, then pushing them into scoring position on a balk. A sac fly scored one to tie 1-1, then two more walks loaded the bases. A 3-run double unloaded the bases for a 4-1 lead, then an RBI groundout to short made it 5-1 for the home side.
F&M took the lead in the third with some one-out hitting, as Falese singled to third, Jakob Hoffman followed with a single up the gut, then Patrick Cettina cleared the bases with a three-run blast to left to make it 5-4. Zach Masnikoff laced an RBI single to center two batters later to knot the game at 5-5, followed by an RBI groundout from Matt Gluck and an RBI single by Spencer Berson to snag a 7-5 lead. The Diplomats tacked on one more after batting around, as Bobby Falese doubled down the left field line to score Berson for an 8-5 lead.
The Diplomats added another in the fourth, as Zach Masnikoff doubled down the right field line to score Patrick Cettina from third for a 9-5 advantage.
Things went downhill for the Diplomats starting in the bottom of the fourth as an RBI single followed by a three-run homer turned the game on its head and tied the game at 9-9. The Spartans used some two-out hitting to snag an 11-9 lead in the fifth with an RBI single to left center. Another two-run homer in the sixth paired with an RBI triple scored three more in the sixth to make it 14-9. A trio of RBI singles in the seventh pushed the York lead to 17-9.
F&M pulled two runs back in the eighth, starting with Tommy Denlinger RBI liner through the left side to score Jakob Hoffman, who doubled to lead off the inning. The Diplomats plated another, but did so at the expense of Connor Rush grounding into a 6-4-3 double play, making it 17-11.
Another three run dinger in the bottom half dashed Diplomat hopes, extending the Spartan lead to its 20-11 final.
Bobby Falese led the way with a 3-3, two double effort. Patrick Cettina finished 2-4 with three runs and a trio of RBI on a homer, while Zach Masnikoff knocked in two on a 2-4 effort. Spencer Berson finished 3-5, touching home twice with an RBI.
Jakob Hoffman went 2-5 at the dish, but struggled on the mound - pitching a third of an inning, giving up five runs and four walks. Carter Davis (0-1) earned the loss, leaving the bases loaded with two outs, with two scoring after Noah Jordan's entry. Shane Rebane tossed the best relief effort of the day, throwing 2.2 innings of hitless help.
F&M has little time to waste, back at home against Ursinus on Tuesday evening, beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Caplan Field.
