Box Score GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall field hockey team got a pair of goals from Darby Klopp and another from Sophie Carroll in the process of moving to 2-0 in the Centennial Conference with a 3-1 win at Gettysburg on Wednesday. The Diplomats have now avenged two of their losses from a season ago during each of those first two conference victories.
Klopp's goals were the second and third of her senior campaign and gives her 16 career goals. Faith DiMantova and and Kat Study were credited with the assists on those second half goals. DiMantova opened the scoring for F&M on Wednesday as she found the back of the cage with just under two minutes to play in the opening half. The Diplomats certainly made the most of every minute in the game as all three of their goals came with under two minutes remaining in the respective quarters.
Franklin & Marshall's first goal was the result of attacking persistence as Gettysburg's defense denied a pair of shot attempts before Carroll was able to find a crease in the defense for her second goal of the season. Carroll's goal was her third of the season after also finding the back of the cage against Christopher Newport and Montclair State. Tonight's goal marked her second game-winner (Christopher Newport) of the season. She is now tied with Klopp for team lead in goals.
The Diplomats outshot Gettysburg 4-1 over the final 30 minutes and were very efficient as they scored on half of those attempts. DiMantova was credited with her first career point as her pass in front of the cage was redirected past the Gettysburg goalie with just under two minutes remaining in the third quarter. F&M got a third goal with under two minutes remaining in the fourth period when Study's first assist of the year was sent home by Klopp. Only a goal with seven seconds remaining from the Bullets kept F&M from recording another shutout.
F&M finished the game with a 10-6 advantage in shots and 6-3 edge in penalty corner chances. Klopp scored on both of her shots during the afternoon, while Sophie Carroll led the team with three shot attempts. Sydney Lippe got the start in goal and made five saves to pick up her second consecutive win while lowering her GAA to 0.33 on the season.
Field hockey will return home this Saturday to wrap up non-conference play when the Diplomats host Mary Washington on Tylus Field. The final non-conference game of F&M's regular season will get underway at 12 p.m. noon.
