Horwitz's Late Equalizer Lands F&M Level With Kean, 1-1

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. -- A 89th minute equalizer from Oscar Horwitz thrilled the home crowd and pulled No. 19 Franklin & Marshall level in a 1-1 draw against Kean on Wednesday evening at Tylus Field. The Diplomats (1-1-1) finished off a frantic ending that saw them rack up eight shots and five corner kicks in the final 15 minutes of play against Kean (2-0-1), who also received votes in the last United Soccer Coaches poll.

F&M came out blasting in the first half, racking up a pair of shots in the first 28 seconds of the contest, as Nic Petruso forced a save from the Kean keeper, before Nathan Schlessinger pushed his effort wide. The Diplomats came close again in the 13th minute, as Schlessinger pinged the crossbar to nearly open the scoring, while Petruso hit the post just five minutes later. F&M kept up the pressure, forcing a pair of saves from a 36th minute effort from Koa Kaliebe and another in the 38th from Philip Monos.

The Diplomats outshot the Cougars by a whopping 11-1 margin in the opening frame, forcing Kean to sit back and defend waves of pressure, while shutting down the visitors' counter-attacks.

Kean came out in the second half with a renewed sense of purpose, making a more concerted effort to put numbers forward and pressure the home side. The Cougars finally broke through in the 61st minute, capitalizing on a goal against the run of play for a 1-0 lead.

After a pair of Kean attempts just two minutes later failed to find the back of the net, the Diplomats ran off a 11 of the next 12 shots in the game. A thundering header from Horwitz rattled the crossbar again in the 66th, marking the third Diplomat effort of the night to be inches away from opening their scoring account.

F&M kept pressing and the Kean defense finally relented in the 89th minute. Following a corner from Shay Adamson that was punched out of the box by the Kean keeper, the ball eventually cycled back around to Adamson, who used some shifty moves to gather himself by the endline. A lofted ball to the back post found a rising Horwitz, who thundered it home for the leveling goal.

The Diplomats outshot the Cougars 26-6 in the contest, while also dominating the corner kick battle 9-4.

Oscar Horwitz led all players with nine shots on the evening, followed by Nic Petruso with five. Nathan Schlessinger and Koa Kaliebe both finished with three attempts.

Sam Farrell made one stop in the win.

The Diplomats return to play on Saturday evening for the 50th incarnation of the annual Boot Game against Elizabethtown. F&M hits the road to face the Blue Jays beginning at 7:30 p.m.
