Box Score EWING, N.J. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (13-9) racked up 13 runs in the top of the fourth inning en route to a 17-14 victory over TCNJ (8-9) in its final non-conference game of the season Tuesday afternoon.
Trailing 7-2 in the top of the fourth, Nolan McCloskey grounded out with the bases loaded to move the runners up one base - scoring Andrew Filippelli from third. A wild pitch allowed Tommy Denlinger to cross the plate to cut TCNJ's lead to 7-4. AJ Desautels walked, followed by Spencer Berson reaching by fielder's choice to once again load the bases. An error followed by a walk on the next two at-bats scored two runs to get the Diplomats within one.
With the bases still loaded, Drew Butera roped a two-RBI double into center field to give F&M its first lead of the contest at 8-7. Back-to-back walks scored Jakob Hoffman from third, followed by a two-RBI single from McCloskey to push the lead to 11-7. F&M pushed across three more runs on a fielder's choice and back-to-back singles to extend its lead to 15-7 before TCNJ could secure the third out and stop the damage.
The Lions came right back in the bottom of the frame, scoring six runs of their own to cut the deficit to 15-13.
The bats stayed hot for the F&M offense in the top of the fifth as Filippelli, Denlinger, and Evan Varga rocketed three-consecutive doubles to score two runs and push the visitors' lead to 17-13.
TCNJ scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but were shut down the rest of the way as the game was called after eight innings due to darkness.
Butera led the F&M offense with three hits, followed by Denlinger and Hoffman each tallying two. Eight different Diplomats recorded an RBI in the win with Hoffman and McCloskey claiming three each. F&M as a team drew 14 walks in the contest for a new program single-game record.
Thomas McLaughlin (2-0) earned the win as he struck out two while not allowing a baserunner through two innings of relief.
Franklin & Marshall kicks off Centennial Conference play Saturday at Swarthmore for a doubleheader starting at 11:30 a.m.
