Box Score 2 HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (23-13, 10-4 CC) earned a split in its Centennial Conference doubleheader at Haverford (17-17, 7-7 CC) Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats were edged in game one, 4-3, before cruising to a 13-6 win in game two.
Game 1: Haverford 4, F&M 3
F&M made it a one-run game in the top of the ninth, but the Ford's denied the Diplomats of a comeback as the tying run was stranded on first base.
Franklin & Marshall opened the scoring first as Patrick Cettina scored on a double play in the top of the third.
Haverford overtook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Ford's added a fourth run in the bottom of the sixth to lead 4-1.
F&M had one final push in the ninth as the Diplomats loaded the bases with no outs to begin the frame. The Fords forced a ground ball and turned a double play as Drew Butera scored on the sequence to cut the deficit in half. An error on the Haverford shortstop allowed Jakob Hoffman to score to get the Diplomats within one.
Hoffman led the Diplomats with three hits in the contest.
Kyle Roche (2-5) was tagged with the loss – striking out three and allowing four earned runs in a complete game effort.
Game 2: F&M 13, Haverford 6
A pair of five-run innings that were highlighted by home runs in each frame sparked the F&M offense – scoring 13 runs in a 13-6 win in game two.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second, Hoffman and Butera ripped consecutive singles to lead off the inning. The next batter, Spencer Berson, rocketed an opposite-field home run to give the Diplomats a 3-1 lead. The homer was Berson's fourth this season and the 12th of his career. Later in the inning, Tommy Alexander was hit by a pitch and immediately stole second. A throwing error in the infield allowed AJ Desautels to reach base and for Alexander to score from second. Desautels worked his way around to third on the play and later scored on a wild pitch – giving F&M a 5-1 advantage.
After Haverford hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second, F&M came right back with a run in the top of the third as Butera scored on a wild pitch to make it a 6-2 game.
The Fords had a big sixth inning – scoring three runs on two hits to get within one of the Diplomats.
F&M worked a bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh – scoring Tommy Denlinger. On the next at-bat, Andrew Filippelli scorched F&M's second grand slam in as many days to give the visitors an 11-5 lead. The slam was Filippelli's first-career home run.
The Diplomats added a pair of runs in the top of the eighth on consecutive singles from Hoffman and Butera – giving F&M a 13-5 lead.
Butera led the Diplomats with three hits, followed by Pat Elliott and Hoffman each tallying two. Berson and Filippelli tied for the game-high in RBI with four each.
Dan Galef (5-0) remains undefeated this spring as he picked up his fifth win on the mound. Galef struck out three and allowed five earned runs in 5.2 innings of work.
Franklin & Marshall hosts Dickinson Tuesday at Caplan Field to start a home-and-home series with the Red Devils. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
