LANCASTER, Pa. – The No. 18 Franklin & Marshall (1-0) used two goals in the final 13 minutes of regulation to upset No. 3 Stevens (0-1-1), 2-1, in the Diplomats' season opener at Tylus Field. Saturday evening's victory is F&M's first win against a top-three opponent since the Diplomats beat then-ranked No. 2 Rutgers-Camden during the 2014 season opener.
Tied at 1-all in the 89th minute, Franklin & Marshall set up a free kick to give the hosts one last chance in the game's final moments.
Nathan Schlessinger sent in a crossing pass that was centered by a header from
Wes Wise.
Oscar Horwitz struck the centered-ball past the outstretched goalkeeper to give the Diplomats the late advantage. The score was the third game-winning goal of Horwitz' career.
After a scoreless first half that saw the Ducks outshoot the Diplomats, 5-2, Stevens broke into the scoring column first with a goal in the 59th minute. 18 minutes later, F&M nabbed the equalizer as
Jordan Samuels found
Koa Kaliebe in the box – setting up an open shot for the junior to bury the Diplomats' first goal of the new season.
Goalkeeper
Levi Kline (1-0) earned the win in his first-career start in net, making four saves.
F&M outshot Stevens in the match, 11-10, with
Connor Anderko and Wise leading the game with three attempts each.
No. 18 Franklin & Marshall looks to build off the big win as it returns to Tylus Field Wednesday to host Lebanon Valley at 4:30 p.m.
