Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Defeated by Swarthmore in Overtime Thriller

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall women's basketball team (7-7, 2-7 CC) surged in the second half of its Centennial Conference (CC) game against Swarthmore (7-7, 5-4 CC) Saturday afternoon at the Mayser Center. However, the Garnet used a strong overtime period to win the game, 60-56.

Trailing 35-23 with 2:21 remaining in the third quarter, F&M chipped in eight-unanswered points to close the frame and narrow the deficit. Hope Schreiber drained a three-pointer, followed by a jumper from Kayla McCrea to get the Diplomats within seven. Ally Trebelev knocked down a free throw and Jaclyn Feit converted a layup in the final minute to reduce the Garnet lead to 35-31 after 30 minutes of play.

F&M continued that momentum in the fourth quarter as Feit connected on the first shot of the period to get the Diplomats within two. After Swarthmore made a jumper, Schreiber responded with a three-pointer on the other end to cut the Garnet lead to 37-36. Swarthmore added two more at the free throw line, but a three-pointer from Lizzie Neville tied the game at 39-all with 8:25 remaining in regulation.

The teams traded baskets for a majority of the quarter with F&M holding a 47-46 lead with under three minutes to play. With under a minute left in the quarter, Neville drew a charge to give the Diplomats possession late. Following her great play on defense, the sophomore made a tough layup on offense to give F&M a three-point advantage. However, Swarthmore connected on a three-pointer with seconds on the clock to force overtime.

In the overtime period, Swarthmore jumped out to a four-point lead, but the Diplomats answered with three points at the charity stripe to reduce the Garnet lead to 57-56. Despite the Diplomats' success on the free throw line, Swarthmore answered with crucial free throws of their own to hold on and win the game.

F&M shot 42.3 percent from the field in the second half, but could only get one of five shots to fall from the field in overtime.

Neville finished the game with 14 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Trebelev once again recorded double-digit scoring figures with 11 points, while nabbing a team-high eight rebounds. Feit also tallied 11 points, while also picking up seven rebounds, four blocks, and three steals.

Franklin & Marshall looks to bounce back on Wednesday when it hits the road to play Dickinson at 6:00 p.m.
