FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Held to just 19 points in the second half, the Franklin & Marshall Men's Basketball team fell to Mary Washington 63-46. It was the final non-conference game for the Diplomats, who will now play 14 straight Centennial matchups to close out the regular season.
With both teams starting slow in the first half, the score was tied 4-4 at the 15-minute mark, as the two sides combined to shoot 4-of-12 from the floor in that span.
Kola Lysynecky then put F&M on top with a three-pointer, but was answered by back-to-back buckets on the other end by the Eagles. After
Kevin Nowoswiat and and
Jaylen Green each made a layup on consecutive possessions, an 8-0 Mary Washington run gave the Eagles a 16-11 edge.
Although the Diplomats saw a field goal drought that spanned nearly six minutes, F&M stayed within reach of Mary Washington, trailing 22-19 with six minutes remaining in the half. Down 29-24 in the final minute before halftime,
Kevin Nowoswiat knocked down a shot from distance to get the Diplomats to within two before a pair of free throws by Matias Prock for the Eagles put Mary Washington up 31-27 heading into the break.Â
F&M failed to register a made shot in the opening three minutes of the second half, as the Eagles quickly extended their lead to 10 behind a 6-0 run. The two teams then trade a pair of field goals each over the next three minutes after which Mary Washington scored six straight points to take a 14-point advantage, its largest of the night. With the Diplomats shooting 1-of-7 from the floor in the following four minutes, the Eagles went ahead by as much as 16. Unable to reduce the deficit to less than double-digits for the remainder of the game, F&M lost its third game of the season.Â
His third double-double of the season, Nowoswiat led the team in both scoring and rebounding with 15 points and 10 boards. As a team, the Diplomats won the turnover margin by six, and scored 10 points off of takeaways.Â
F&M will now return home for the first time in nearly a month, as it welcomes McDaniel to the Mayser Center on Saturday, January 6 at 3 p.m.
