LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall field hockey team (6-4, 3-0 CC) earned a hard-fought upset-victory over No. 10 Bryn Mawr (8-2, 1-1 CC), 1-0, in Saturday afternoon's Centennial Conference (CC) match at Tylus Field. Saturday's win is F&M's first over a top-ten ranked opponent since defeating No. 1 TCNJ and No. 5 Johns Hopkins during the Diplomats' run to a NCAA National Championship appearance in 2019.
Before the game, the Franklin & Marshall field hockey team honored its eight seniors playing their final season in the blue and white. Those seniors include
Abby D'Anjolell,
Grace Fass,
Riley Klopp,
Sydney Kuehn,
Annie Malatesta,
Alison McCarey,
Jessica Miller and
Jorja Pastore.
The game's lone goal came in the first quarter off one of F&M's five penalty corners on the day.
Caitlin Hoover sent a shot towards the net that was saved by the Owls' goalkeeper. Malatesta cleaned up the rebound and put her shot in the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Meanwhile, Hoover was credited with her third assist of the season on the play.
Malatesta had another opportunity to score on a penalty stroke just two minutes after her initial goal. However, the senior's attempt rang off the right post to keep the contest a one-goal game.
From that point F&M played lockdown defense with defensive saves from Malatesta,
Maya Rorick and
Kat Thistlewaite to deny Bryn Mawr of a potential equalizer. Goalkeeper
Meghan Dole made four saves in net to pick up her fifth shutout-win of the season.
The Diplomats outshot the Owls, 12-10, in the contest with Hoover leading the game with four shot attempts.
Franklin & Marshall looks to extend its winning streak and stay perfect in CC play when it travels to Gettysburg on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
