HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall women's basketball team (10-12, 5-12 CC) outlasted Haverford (7-16, 4-14 CC), 55-53, in overtime during Thursday evening's Centennial Conference (CC) thriller.
Lizzie Neville was incredible down the stretch for the Diplomats as she not only made the game-tying basket to send the contest to overtime, but the sophomore scored all eight points in the extra period to push F&M past the Fords.
Trailing 47-45 with 11 seconds in regulation, Neville drove to the paint and made a tough layup in traffic to tie the score. Haverford had a chance to win the game on the other end, but the Fords' point guard Ally Landau couldn't get her shot to fall – sending the game into overtime.
From that point, Neville took over as she connected on her first two shots of overtime. Coming out of a timeout with under 10 seconds on the clock, Haverford held a 53-52 lead with F&M inbounding the ball on the offensive baseline.
Kayla McCrea found Neville by the three-point line as the point guard stepped inside the arc, drained her shot, and drew a foul to stun the Fords.
The win marks the Diplomats' first overtime victory since defeating Washington College, 66-61, during the 2018-19 season.
Franklin & Marshall trailed by as much as nine in the contest when it started chipping away at the second-quarter deficit. Behind 20-11,
Ally Trebelev and
Jaclyn Feit knocked down three free throws to narrow the gap to six. Feit continued pressing on offense as she scored on the next two possessions to keep pace with the Fords. A free throw from Trebelev and a three-pointer from McCrea on the following possession tied the score up at 24-all with 2:43 remaining until halftime. The Fords would eventually enter the break with a 28-27 advantage.
Out of the gate in the second half, the lead changed several times until a layup from Trebelev handed the Diplomats the upper hand, 33-32. F&M fended off Haverford late in the period with four foul shots to take a 37-36 lead into the fourth quarter.
Feit led the Diplomats in points with 19, while finishing one rebound short of a double-double with nine boards. Neville followed with 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and four steals in the victory. Trebelev ended the game with 11 points and eight rebounds.
