ORLANDO, Fla. – The Franklin & Marshall women's tennis team wrapped up its week in Florida with matches against Sweet Briar and Connecticut College. Unfortunately, it was pair of close defeats to close the week in Florida as the Diplomats fell 5-4 to the Vixens during the afternoon before a 7-2 match against Connecticut College that saw four singles matches go to 10-point tiebreaks.
The No. 3 doubles team of Kakie Colclough and Presley Daggett found success throughout a perfect 2-0 day for the duo. With those two victories, that pairing improved to 5-3 together during the spring dual season. F&M's No. 3 duo started its day with a tiebreak victory against Sweet Briar, winning 8-6 after splitting the first 14 games. Colclough and Daggett were once again sharp against Connecticut College, completing their perfect day with an 8-5 victory.
Doubles was an overall strength for the Diplomats as they started their day with a sweep of those three matches against Sweet Briar. At the top of the lineup, Mackenzie Sherman and Sophia Rhazali earned a team point following their 8-6 victory. The No. 2 duo of Lorena Saavedra and Amelia Squires won their fourth match together this spring when they doubled up their opponents by an 8-4 score.
Rebecca Bellick earned a win at No. 3 singles against the Vixens when she claimed a straight set victory by a 6-4, 6-1 score. The Diplomats played competitive singles against Sweet Briar, but the Vixens were able to come away with four straight set wins while also claiming a crucial 10-point tiebreak at No. 4 singles to help solidify the final team score in their favor.
Amelia Squires came back to earn a straight set victory against Connecticut College as she defeated her opponent at No. 4 by a 7-5, 6-3 score. Ten-point tiebreaks were once again crucial during the match with Connecticut College as Mackenzie Sherman, Rebecca Bellick, Lorena Saavedra, and Kakie Colclough were all locked in those battles during decisive third sets. However, the Camels rallied to take each of those matches to create a final team score that was not indicative of the level of play between the two teams.
When women's tennis returns to campus, the Diplomats will next face a key regional matchup as they host Stevens on Saturday, March 23 with first serves scheduled for 12 p.m. noon.
