LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall field hockey team closed the non-conference portion of its regular season schedule with a 2-0 win against Washington and Lee on Tylus Field Saturday afternoon. The match between the Diplomats and the Generals marked the first time in program history that these teams have met.
The Diplomats got their third win of the season with Annie Malatesta scoring the eventual game-winning goal just over six minutes into the contest. Malatesta's goal was the first of her senior campaign after she scored three goals from her defensive position on the field last fall. That goal came as part of a first quarter which saw the Diplomats own a 4-0 advantage in shots after 15 minutes of play.
After scoring just over six minutes into the opening half, Keira Boensch tallied the team's second goal of the afternoon just 5:51 into the second half. Her second goal of the season marked her second consecutive match in which she rattled the back of the cage. That goal makes her the fourth multi-goal scorer for F&M this season. Her goal was set up on a pass from Alison McCarey who registered the third assist of her career on the play. She now has a career-high two assists on the season.
In addition to its 2-0 victory, the Diplomats held the advantage in shots (12-8) and penalty corners (9-6) at the final whistle. Goalie Meghan Dole made four saves on the afternoon as all three of the team's victory have now come via shutout.
Field hockey will now have a full week to prepare for its Centennial Conference opener when the Diplomats travel to Chestertown to battle Washington College. That match is set for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday, September 28.
