Krisko's First Career Goal Sinks WAC, 1-0

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Caroline Krisko scored her first collegiate goal at the most opportune time Saturday as that tally was ultimately the difference for the Franklin & Marshall field hockey team during its 1-0 win at Washington College. That match was the Centennial Conference opener for both teams.

The contest was largely dominated by the Diplomats as they held a 22-6 edge in total shots, but 16 saves from the Shorewomen kept the hosts close throughout the conference opener. Franklin & Marshall held a 9-1 advantage in shots after 30 minutes of action, but seven saves from WAC goalie Charlotte Schurman helped to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime. Those totals included the Shorewomen successfully defending five penalty corner attempts from the Diplomats.

Franklin & Marshall continued to apply nearly all of the pressure during the second half. Those efforts were finally rewarded during the 42nd minute of game action. The Shorewomen had their only shot on goal of the game, which was turned away by Meghan Dole, during the 36th minute of action. The hosts were given a green card just 1:43 before F&M's pressure paid off as Krisko's shot ricocheted off of the WAC defense and into the back of the cage.

Even with the lead, the Diplomats searched for an insurance goal with seven more shots during the fourth quarter, but a defensive save against Jessica Miller nullified F&M's best chance of the final period. In addition to its advantage in shots, the Diplomats held a 9-4 edge in penalty corners. F&M had to defend one of those penalty corner chances for the hosts with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, but did so by watching a shot sail wide of the target. WAC's final attempt came with 43 seconds left in the contest, as that final try also missed wide of the cage.

Krisko was one of six Diplomats who recorded multiple shot attempts on the afternoon. Miller led the team with five shots, while Caitlin Hoover and Hannah Fitzgerald added four more to the attacking efforts. Dole's save during the third period helped the Franklin & Marshall secure its fourth shutout during its first eight contests.

Centennial Conference play continues for the Diplomats this upcoming week as they host Dickinson on Wednesday in a 4:30 p.m. start before taking on No. 13 Bryn Mawr next Saturday at 12 p.m. as a part of the College's True Blue Weekend.
