GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall women's basketball team (11-5, 2-3 CC) lost its Centennial Conference (CC) game on the road at No. 10 Gettysburg (14-1, 4-0 CC), 65-42, Wednesday evening at Bream Gymnasium. The Diplomats battled to keep within striking distance for a majority of the first half, but Gettysburg began to grow its lead at the halfway point of the second quarter en route to sweeping F&M in the season series.
Trailing by five with seven minutes remaining in the first quarter, F&M went on a 12-3 run that started with a jumper from
Lizzie Neville to make the score, 8-5. Two minutes later,
Kayla McCrea drained a three-pointer, followed by
Gia Sioutis connecting on a jumper to give the Diplomats a 10-8 advantage. McCrea continued her hot stretch from beyond the arc as she sank another triple to put the visitors ahead by five. After Gettysburg responded with a three of its own,
Kennedy Wilburn knocked down a jumper with 40 seconds on the clock to give F&M a 15-11 lead. However, Gettysburg sank two free throws in the final seconds to reduce the Diplomats' lead to 15-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams traded baskets to start the second frame as
Ally Trebelev followed up a Gettysburg jumper with a layup on the next possession to push F&M ahead, 17-15. However, that would be F&M's final lead of the night as Gettysburg scored nine points before Wilburn made a layup to stop the Bullets' run. After Gettysburg made a jumper, Sioutis converted an and-one opportunity to cut the hosts' lead to 26-22. Despite the big play, the Bullets finished the quarter by outscoring the Diplomats, 9-4, in the final four minutes to take a 35-26 lead into the halftime intermission.
From that point, Gettysburg began to pull away on the scoreboard as the Bullets tallied 30 points and limited F&M to 16 in the final 20 minutes – growing the hosts' lead to as large as 25.
Franklin & Marshall as a team shot 28.3 percent (15-for-53) from the field and 30 percent (6-for-20) from beyond the arc in the contest.
Neville led F&M with 12 points, five assists and one steal in the game. Wilburn finished her night with eight points, 13 rebounds and two blocks.
Franklin & Marshall now travels to Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday to face No. 25 Johns Hopkins at 1:00 p.m.
