CHESTERTOWN, Md.-
Caitlin Hoover's double-overtime winner handed the No. 18 Franklin & Marshall field hockey team (11-3, 4-2 Centennial Conference) a 2-1 win on the road at Washington College (5-10, 2-5 Centennial Conference) on Saturday afternoon.
Hoover's conference-leading fifth game winner of the season completed a brace on the day for her. In goal,
Meghan Dole made five saves on six total chances to earn the win.Â
The Diplomats had full control of the first quarter, outshooting the hosts 11-0 and scoring the game's opening goal in the tenth minute.
Sophia Sarbanes dribbled into the circle and passed the ball to Hoover in front of goal. Her initial back-handed shot was cleared off the line by a defender back in her direction, and she guided the ball past the keeper from a yard away on the second occasion.Â
Washington College scored an equalizer in the 25th minute via a penalty corner in the second minute. The initial pass was played across the goal from the circle and slotted through the Diplomats' defense at the near post for a 1-1 scoreline. Washington kept F&M without a shot in the second quarter while generating six shots and two penalty corners.
Neither team was able to find a game-winner in the second half, as the Shorewomen outshot the Diplomats 5-2 across the 30 minutes to send the game into overtime.
Franklin & Marshall generated all of the chances in the first overtime period, totaling three shots and three penalty corners, although
Megan Dadio had two shots blocked by the Shorewomen's defense.Â
Hoover's game-winner came just 90 seconds into the second overtime period, as Dadio created the initial chance from a through ball into the circle. Hoover's initial shot was saved, but the rebound came right back to her. This time she was able to beat the goalkeeper at the near post to earn F&M a fourth win in the Centennial Conference.
F&M outshot the Shorewomen 19-11 across the game, while generating ten penalty corners against eight from the hosts.
F&M returns to Tylus Field to host Ursinus on Wednesday, October 22, at 7:00 p.m.
