LANCASTER, Pa.- The No. 17 Franklin & Marshall field hockey team (12-3, 5-2 Centennial Conference) dominated in Wednesday's clash against visiting Ursinus (6-8, 2-5 Centennial Conference), holding the Bears to seven shots and one shot on goal in a 3-0 shutout.
Caitlin Hoover moved to 22 goals on the season, scoring two goals with one assist.
Ava Lofgren maintained her strong offensive form with one goal and one assist, while
Hannah Fitzgerald had one assist.
Meghan Dole was tasked with just one stop in the shutout.
The games first goal came from Hoover in the eighth minute. The play began by drawing a foul in the Diplomats' defensive end.
Megan Dadio and
Keira Boensch progressed the ball forward before Lofgren crossed the ball to Hoover in front of goal from the right side. Hoover, unmarked, took one touch before firing the ball past the keeper low and to the far post. Â
Ursinus generated the most chances of the entire game in the first quarter, outshooting F&M 3-2 and generating three penalty corners against zero from the Diplomats. The second quarter saw just four combined shots, all via F&M.
The Diplomats broke away with two goals inside of 90 seconds to begin the second. Lofgren scored her goal 34 seconds after the break.
Sarah Weitzman broke through multiple lines of the Ursinus defense with her through ball from midfield to Hoover. Hoover then crossed the ball to Lofgren who outdueled the goalkeeper with a close-range shot.Â
Hoover scored her second goal one minute later. Dadio slotted a ball through the midfield to find Fitzgerald in space. She dribbled to the edge of the circle, passing to Hoover who beat the keeper from ten yards away. Hoover had a chance to complete a hat-trick in the fourth quarter on a penalty stroke, although her shot was stopped by the Ursinus goalkeeper.
F&M maintained control of the game in the second half, outshooting the Bears 10-4. Across the entire game, they led in shots on goal, 12-1.Â
