LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (10-8) used 18 hits to score 14 runs in a high-scoring 14-13 win over Cairn (8-5) in Wednesday afternoon's non-conference contest at Penn Medicine Park.
F&M jumped into the scoring column first in the bottom of the second inning as a triple from
AJ Desautels set up an RBI-single from
Andrew Filippelli, giving F&M a 1-0 lead. After
Conner Rush singled,
Matt Hollender and
Colin Mackenzie ripped back-to-back doubles to give the Diplomats a 4-0 cushion. Mackenzie scored later in the inning as he advanced home on a throw to second during a steal attempt to add F&M's fifth run of the game.
Cairn plated a run in the top of the third, but F&M went right back to work in the bottom of the fourth. The Diplomats loaded the bases with no outs for
Nick Lorenzo to knock a two-RBI double into right field to push the lead to 7-1. F&M then pushed across its eighth run of the game as Lorenzo escaped a rundown between second and third, allowing Mackenzie to swipe home on the play.
Tanner Wolpert capped the inning as he drilled an RBI-single through the right side of the infield to make the score 9-1.
Leading 9-3 with two outs in the fifth, Mackenzie doubled and Lorenzo singled to keep the inning alive. The next batter,
Bobby Falese launched his third home run of the season and 25th homer of his career over the left field wall to give the home team a 12-3 advantage.
The Highlanders pushed across two runs in the top of the seventh, but F&M got those runs right back in the bottom of the frame as Wolpert notched a two-RBI double to give the Diplomats a 14-5 lead.
Cairn fought back with three runs in the eighth and four runs in the ninth to get within a run, but
David McGeorge managed to close the door on the Highlanders comeback hopes – earning his first-career save.
Seven of F&M's nine extra-base hits were doubles, which is tied for the third-most in the program single-game record book. Falese led the Diplomats with four hits, while Rush tallied three in the win. Falese is now just seven hits away from reaching 200 for his career. Lorenzo and Wolpert ended the game with a team-high three RBI each in the victory.
Dan Galef (4-1) earned his fourth win of the year, tossing four strikeouts and allowing four earned runs in six innings of work.
Franklin & Marshall hits the road for a non-conference doubleheader at Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, starting at noon.
