Baseball Sweeps Rutgers-Newark

NEWARK, N.J. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (12-8) claimed two non-conference wins over Rutgers-Newark (8-10) Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats run-ruled the Scarlet Raiders twice on the day with a 13-3 win in game one, followed by a 19-7 victory in game two.

Game 1: Franklin & Marshall 13, Rutgers-Newark 3 (7 Innings)
The Diplomats got the bats working early in the contest as a big first inning gave F&M an early cushion on the scoreboard. Nick Lorenzo led off the game with a single up the middle, followed by a double from Bobby Falese to put two runners in scoring position. AJ Desautels then laid down a bunt on a squeeze play to score Lorenzo, while also reaching first for an RBI-single. Tanner Wolpert worked a walk to load the bases for Conner Rush to single and score Falese for F&M's second run. Walks to Michael von Zuben and Colin Mackenzie pushed the Diplomats' lead to 4-0 and forced Rutgers-Newark to make an early pitching change.

Noah Ford continued the rally as he ripped a two-RBI single into center field to give the visitors a 6-0 advantage. F&M capped the inning with Mackenzie scoring on a groundout to make the score 7-0.

Franklin & Marshall picked up where it left off in the top of the second as the Diplomats loaded the bases with one out. A wild pitch, followed by an infield single from Ford brought home two runners to give F&M a 9-0 lead.

F&M brought home two runs in both the third and seventh innings to earn the run-rule victory.

Ford led the Diplomats with three hits and four RBI, while Wolpert tallied two hits and three RBI.

Bijan Anvar (3-1) earned his third win of the year, striking out a career-high eight batters and allowing one earned run in five innings. Garrett Stowe ended the game on the mound, striking out one and allowing two earned runs in two innings of relief.

Game 2: Franklin & Marshall 19, Rutgers-Newark 7 (8 Innings)
The Diplomats scored six runs in the fifth inning and eight runs in the eighth to complete the series sweep of Rutgers-Newark Saturday afternoon.

Tied 3-3 in the top of the fifth, Falese singled to start the frame. Two batters later, the senior shortstop scored on a single from Matt Hollender to regain the lead for F&M. Andrew Filippelli then doubled to left field, scoring Hollender to extend the lead to 5-3. Desautels followed with a triple to right center to bring in the Diplomats' sixth run of the game. A passed ball and a two-RBI single from von Zuben gave F&M a 9-3 cushion at the end of the inning.

F&M led 11-3 in the bottom of the seventh as the Scarlet Raiders rallied for three hits and four runs to make the score 11-7.

In the top of the eighth, Wolpert led off the frame by launching his third home run of the year over the right field wall to extend the lead to five. F&M later loaded the bases for Nolan McCloskey and Ryan Rodriguez to each earn a walk to make the score 14-7. A wild pitch, followed by a walk and a three-RBI double from Hollender gave F&M a 19-7 advantage to run-rule the Scarlet Raiders.

Falese and Hollender both recorded three hits, while Hollender led the game with four RBI.

Peter Mullen (1-1) claimed his first win of the season as he struck out seven and allowed two earned runs in five innings of work.
