BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (13-8) extended its winning streak to five Sunday afternoon, defeating Moravian (8-10), 15-2, in non-conference action. The Diplomats only needed seven innings to earn their 13th win of the year as F&M picked up its third-consecutive run-rule victory.
Moravian broke into the scoring column first in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead. F&M responded in the top of the second as the Diplomats loaded the bases with one out in the frame. A fielder's choice allowed
Matt Hollender to score from third and tie the game at 1-1.
Nolan McCloskey then hit an infield single to score
AJ Desautels, giving the Diplomats a 2-1 lead.
Moravian fought back with a run in the bottom of the second to tie the game up at 2-2. In the top of the third,
Nick Lorenzo worked a walk to start the inning. After two-consecutive groundouts moved Lorenzo to third, the sophomore third baseman was brought home on an RBI-single from
Conner Rush to retake the lead for F&M, 3-2.
Franklin & Marshall began pulling away in the top of the fourth, starting with the Diplomats loading the bases with one out in the frame. A hit-by-pitch, followed by a walk brought two runners home to extend the lead to 5-2. The next batter,
Tanner Wolpert emptied the bases on a three-RBI double to right field to cushion the lead at 8-2. Two more walks and a fielder's choice allowed Wolpert to come home for the Diplomats' ninth run of the contest.
Wolpert continued his impressive performance by driving in McCloskey on an RBI-single during the fifth inning to push the lead to 10-2. F&M later added three runs on two hits in the top of sixth to make the score 13-2. The Diplomats capped their scoring with
Enrico Tufano registering his first-career home run as he rocketed a two-run homer over the left field wall to put F&M ahead 15-2.
Franklin & Marshall totaled 10 hits with Hollender, McCloskey and Wolpert all recording two hits each. Wolpert also led the Diplomats with a career-high five-RBI in the victory. On the base paths, the Diplomats swiped five stolen bases with
Vincent Mariniello stealing a team-high two bases in the contest.
Colin Mackenzie (2-0) earned his second win of the season, striking out four and allowing just two hits and no earned runs in four innings of relief.
Kiernan Keller was tagged with a no-decision as he struck out five and allowed one earned run in three innings on the mound.
Franklin & Marshall returns to Penn Medicine Park on Tuesday, hosting Albright at 3:30 p.m.
