Baseball Opens California Trip With 15-4 Win Over Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (7-2) earned a 15-4 victory over Redlands (10-7), a team receiving votes in the national poll, Saturday afternoon to start its Spring Break trip to California.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second, Tanner Wolpert led off the frame with a single through the right side of the infield. F&M worked the bases loaded for Gideon Schwartz to single into left field, scoring two and giving F&M the lead. A fielder's choice on the next at-bat allowed Michael von Zuben to score, extending the lead to 3-1.

The Bulldogs responded quickly in the bottom of the second as they plated three runs to retake the lead, 4-3. In the top of the third, AJ Desautels and Nick DiGiacomo both singled to put runners at the corners for Wolpert to bring in a run on a sacrifice fly - tying the game at 4-4.

In the top of the fourth, Andrew Filippelli singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from von Zuben. The next batter, Schwartz doubled down the third base line to score Filippelli for the go-ahead run.

F&M continued to add on in the fifth inning as Bobby Falese homered to right field for his second home run of the season. DiGiacomo singled, followed by a double from Wolpert to score the F&M right fielder and cushion the lead at 7-4. After a single from Nick Lorenzo put runners at the corners, a sacrifice fly from von Zuben plated Wolpert to give F&M an 8-4 advantage.

The Diplomats then pushed across three runs in the seven and four runs in the ninth to secure the win over Redlands.

Schwartz led the F&M offense with three hits and four RBI. DiGiacomo and Falese ended the day with three hits and two RBI each. Filippelli, Lorenzo and Wolpert all notched two hits in the victory.

Dan Galef (3-0) had a strong showing on the mound to earn his third win of the season. Galef struck out six, while allowing just four hits and no earned runs in six innings of work. Kiernan Keller ended the game with three strikeouts, while allowing one hit and no earned runs in three innings of relief to claim his first save of the season.
