Baseball Falls in Doubleheader at McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (17-14, 3-6 CC) dropped both games of its doubleheader against Centennial Conference (CC) foe McDaniel (14-15-1, 5-4 CC) Sunday afternoon. The Green Terror won game one, 8-6, before completing the sweep with a 5-3 victory in game two.

Game 1: McDaniel 8, Franklin & Marshall 6
Tied 5-5 in the bottom of the third, McDaniel scored three runs to take control of the lead. F&M fought back with a run in the top of the fourth, but that was the last run either team would score for the rest of the contest.

The Green Terror jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but the Diplomats pushed back in the top of the third. After Nolan McCloskey walked, AJ Desautels drove him in on an RBI-double for F&M's first run of the game. Desautels made his way to third base to set up Bobby Falese to bring him home on an RBI-single to cut the deficit to three. The next batter, Conner Rush rocketed a double into left center field to score Falese and reduce McDaniel's lead to 5-3. Back-to-back singles from Nick Lorenzo and Matt Hollender brought home Rush to get F&M within a run of tying the game. The Diplomats worked the bases loaded for Nick DiGiacomo to take a walk - scoring the tying run of the game.

After McDaniel regained the lead in the third, F&M responded by loading the bases with no outs to begin the fourth. Hollender brought home Desautels on an RBI-sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 8-6. However, the Diplomats couldn't bring in the other two runners as McDaniel limited the damage.

F&M had seven different players tally a hit with Hollender driving in a team-high two RBI in the game. The Diplomats also left 13 runners stranded on base in the contest.

Kiernan Keller (3-2) was tagged with the loss, striking out two and allowing five earned runs in two innings of work.

Game 2: McDaniel 5, Franklin & Marshall 3
McDaniel took an early 5-0 advantage in the contest, but F&M battled back with one run in the sixth and two runs in the sixth to get within two. However, the Diplomats were kept off the scoreboard for the rest of the game as the Green Terror held onto the sweep.

A four-run first inning, followed by one run in the fourth inning gave the Green Terror an early lead. In the top of the sixth, Gideon Schwartz walked and Andrew Filippelli singled to put runners at the corners. A fielder's choice during the next at-bat allowed Schwartz to score for F&M's first run of the game.

In the top of the seventh, F&M got two runners into scoring position for Desautels to notch an RBI-single to make the score 5-2. McCloskey then came home to score on a groundout to get the Diplomats within two of tying the game. Despite the late surge, F&M couldn't push across anymore runs to fall in game two.

Filippelli and Rush led the Diplomats with two hits each, while Desautels and Lorenzo both recorded one RBI in the game.

Sebastian Holl (0-1) was hit with the loss, allowing four earned runs in the first inning. Peter Mullen struck out six and allowed one earned run in five innings of relief. Luca Marshall finished the game, striking out one and allowing just one hit and no earned runs in two innings pitched.

Franklin & Marshall returns to Penn Medicine Park on Monday to host Ursinus under the lights at 7:45 p.m.
