CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (20-14, 6-6 CC) pushed past Washington College (18-15, 4-8 CC), 7-5, in Friday afternoon's Centennial Conference (CC) game. The Diplomats brought two runs home in the eighth to take a late lead en route to completing its series sweep of the Shoremen.
After two quick outs in the top of the first,
Bobby Falese singled to keep the inning alive for
Tanner Wolpert to belt a two-run home run over the right center field wall to give F&M an early advantage. The blast was Wolpert's fourth home run of the season. Despite the early lead for F&M, Washington College plated two runs of their own in the bottom-half of the frame to tie the contest at 2-2.
F&M came right back in the top of the second as
Nick Lorenzo and
Andrew Filippelli both singled to put runners at the corners with no outs. Lorenzo came home to score two at-bats later on a fielder's choice to regain the lead for the Diplomats, 3-2.
Franklin & Marshall continued to add runs in the top of the fifth as
Nolan McCloskey roped a double down the left field line. McCloskey then came home to score on an RBI-single from
AJ Desautels to extend the lead to 4-2. Washington College once again responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 4-4.
In the top of the eighth,
Matt Hollender was hit by a pitch and
Troy Repaci entered the game to run for the F&M catcher. After Repaci stole second, Lorenzo drilled a single through the right side of the infield to score the runner, giving the visitors a 5-4 advantage. Lorenzo advanced to third on an error and scored on a single from Filippelli to cushion the Diplomats' lead at 6-4.
Washington College narrowed the deficit to a run in the bottom of the eighth, but F&M came right back in the top of the ninth. McCloskey worked a lead-off walk, stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. The junior then came into score on an RBI-single from Wolpert to give the Diplomats a 7-5 lead.
Five Diplomats ended the contest with multiple hits, while Wolpert led the game with three RBI.
David McGeorge (2-3) earned the win as he struck out three and allowed two earned runs in three innings of relief.
Bijan Anvar collected his fourth save of the season, fanning two batters to close out the ninth inning.
Peter Mullen was tagged with a no-decision, striking out five and allowing no earned runs in four innings of work.
Franklin & Marshall returns to Caplan Field on Saturday to host Dickinson in a doubleheader, starting at noon.
