Baseball Swept in Doubleheader at Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (16-12, 2-4 CC) fell in both games of its Centennial Conference (CC) doubleheader against Swarthmore (14-13, 5-1 CC) on Saturday. The Garnet defeated the Diplomats, 6-1, in game one before taking game two, 4-3.

Game 1: Swarthmore 6, Franklin & Marshall 1
The Diplomats got the first run of the game, but Swarthmore responded with two runs in the sixth and four runs in the eighth to claim the win in game one.

AJ Desautels worked a walk to lead off the top of the fifth. After a single from Conner Rush, Andrew Filippelli roped a single into left center field to score Desautels for the first run of the ballgame.

Two errors in the bottom of the sixth led to two runs for the Garnet as Swarthmore gained a 2-1 advantage. Swarthmore then put together three hits for four runs in the eighth to cushion its game-one lead.

Rush led the Diplomats at the plate as he tallied his second three-hit game of the season.

Bijan Anvar (3-2) was tagged with the loss, striking out four and allowing no earned runs in 5.2 innings pitched.

Game 2: Swarthmore 4, Franklin & Marshall 3
F&M tied the game at 3-all in the top of the sixth inning, but a run scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth was the deciding factor as Swarthmore held on to complete the sweep of the Diplomats.

F&M got its scoring started in the top of the first inning. After a walk to Nick Lorenzo, Bobby Falese drove an RBI-double into right center field to put the Diplomats ahead, 1-0. A wild pitch allowed Falese to advance to third, which set up an RBI-sacrifice fly for Desautels to score Franklin & Marshall's second run of the contest.

Swarthmore battled back in the bottom half of the first with three hits that led to three runs to overtake F&M on the scoreboard.

In the top of the sixth, Desautels walked and Filippelli singled to put runners at the corners with one out. Gideon Schwartz followed with a single into left field to drive in Desautels, tying the game at 3-3.

After Swarthmore regained the lead in the eighth, F&M threatened in the top of the ninth. Matt Holleneder walked and Lorenzo reached on an error to put the tying run on third with two outs. However, Swarthmore ended the game with a strikeout to hold onto the win.

Schwartz registered two hits and one RBI in the contest. Desautels, Falese and Colin Mackenzie also recorded hits in game two.

David McGeorge was hit with the loss, allowing one earned run in one inning of relief. Peter Mullen received a no-decision in his sixth start this season, striking out a season-high nine batters and allowing three earned runs in 6.2 innings of work.

Franklin & Marshall will look to bounce back when it travels to play Ursinus on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
