Men's Soccer Downs Elizabethtown, 1-0, in the Battle for the Smith-Herr Boot

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team (1-4) earned its first win of the season as it defeated Elizabethtown (2-3), 1-0, in Saturday evening's Battle for the Smith-Herr Boot. The Diplomats have now won six of their last seven meetings with the Blue Jays.

F&M had the lone goal of the game come in the 18th minute as Jack Baer sent a pass to Caden Darby by the left post of the Etown net. Darby centered the ball to Ethan Phillips to fire into the cage for his first-career goal. Baer was credited with second-career assist, while Darby picked up his first-career assist on the play.

F&M outshot the Blue Jays, 7-2, in the first 45 minutes of play.

Elizabethtown came out firing in the second half, but the Diplomats' defense stood tall. The Blue Jays had their best opportunity come in the 76th minute as Etown's Jude Ashley fired a shot that rang off the crossbar. The rebound kicked back out to Ashley, who rocketed a shot that was saved by a diving Diego Moreno – keeping the Blue Jays off the scoreboard.

The Diplomats outshot Elizabethtown, 16-13, in the contest with F&M generating four shots on net. Jack Borden led the Diplomats with four shots, while Wes Wise followed with three shot attempts in the win. In his second-career start in net, Moreno made five saves to earn his first-career shutout victory.
