Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Diplomats Soar Past No. 9 Falcons in 3-2 Away Victory

GRANTHAM, Pa.- The Franklin & Marshall field hockey team (2-0) controlled the pace in a tightly-contested contest against No. 9 Messiah (0-2), beating the Falcons 3-2 on the road on Wednesday night.

Isabelle Allen provided the assist on both of Hannah Fitzgerald's goals, while Bella Konchar broke a 2-2 tie in the third quarter with her second successful penalty stroke of the young season. Meghan Dole saved three shots in goal.

Messiah generated a few chances in a relatively quiet first quarter. Their best chance came in the tenth minute when a backhanded shot from ten yards away and a close-range rebounded shot were saved by Dole. In total, they registered three shots and a pair of penalty corners.

After registering their first shot of the game a couple of minutes into the second quarter, F&M opened the scoring on a counterattack. After Allen dispossessed the Falcons in the Diplomats' defensive third, she soon provided the assist in a perfectly slotted through ball to Fitzgerald who beat the goalkeeper low and to their right.

Messiah controlled the next few minutes with two shots and two penalty corners before F&M doubled their advantage on another Allen-Fitzgerald combo. This time, Allen beat her defender dribbling along the endline before playing a cutback cross to Fitzgerald into front of goal for a close-range right to the keeper's right.

The Falcons were able to cut into the lead at the halftime buzzer. A shot right inside the arc deflected off an intervening F&M defender's stick, going up and over Dole for a 2-1 scoreline at halftime.

Messiah pushed for a game-leveling goal to open the third quarter with five shots and two penalty corners inside of the first three minutes. They continued their push and eventually tied the game in the 40th minute via a penalty corner. A diagonal pass was fired across the front of goal for a close-range shot to the right of Dole.

Just a minute later, the Diplomats drew a penalty stroke and called upon Konchar. For the second time this year, she executed from the spot to give the Diplomats the lead for good.

The Diplomats used their efficiency in front of their goal to their advantage, putting all eight of their shots on goal. In contrast, Messiah had 18 shots and five shots on goal. The Falcons also drew 11 penalty corners against two from F&M.

Messiah controlled the flow in the quarter as they looked to tie the game again. Despite four shots and three penalty corners, including a blocked shot after time expired on a penalty corner, F&M retained the lead for their second win of the year.

F&M is back at Tylus Field when they host Montclair State this Saturday, September 6, at 3:00 p.m.
