WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Franklin & Marshall women's basketball team (9-5, 2-2 CC) was defeated on the road at (RV) McDaniel (13-1, 2-1 CC), 79-45, in Saturday afternoon's non-conference contest.
Lizzie Neville highlighted the day for F&M as she became the 19th player in program history to score 1,000 career points. Neville also became the first Diplomat in the
Brianna Spector era to reach 1,000 points.
The teams traded baskets to start the contest as McDaniel took an early 6-2 lead.
Gia Sioutis recorded a layup at the 6:08 mark to get F&M within two. The Green Terror responded with a three-pointer, but
Mackenzie Ward scored a quick layup to cut the home team's lead to 9-6. From that point, McDaniel closed the quarter on a 12-4 run to take a 21-10 lead through 10 minutes of play.
Neville got the scoring started in the second quarter as she made a layup to reduce the deficit to single digits. Sioutis followed with a pair of free throws to get the Diplomats within seven. Following the Diplomats' run, McDaniel began to gain momentum as it built the lead to 33-17 with 4:42 remaining in the half. Neville knocked down two free throws and
Fiona Reckner connected on a jumper to lower the deficit to 12. After the Green Terror made a three-pointer,
Gianna Modica splashed a three on the next possession to bring the score to 36-24. A jumper from McDaniel in the final minutes gave the Green Terror a 14-point advantage entering the halftime intermission.
The Green Terror dominated the second half as they outscored the Diplomats, 41-21, in the final 20 minutes. F&M was limited to just six points in the third quarter, including a free throw from Neville that secured 1,000 points for her career.
F&M shot 32.0 percent (16-of-50) from the field and 25.0 percent (3-of-12) from beyond the arc in the game. Meanwhile, McDaniel shot an impressive 57.9 percent (33-of-57) from the field and 47.6 percent (10-of-21) from behind the three-point line in the contest. The Green Terror also outrebounded the Diplomats, 35-23, in the game.
Neville led F&M with 11 points, while also tallying four rebounds and one steal.
Kayla McCrea followed with seven points, five rebounds, and three assists in the contest.
Franklin & Marshall returns to the Mayser Center on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. to host (RV) Gettysburg.
