DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team (11-5) won its final game of the RussMatt Invitational, 6-4, over Salem State (4-4) Saturday morning. The Diplomats erased an early 3-0 deficit with four runs in the second to jump ahead of the Vikings on the scoreboard. With the win, F&M finishes the tournament with a 5-2 record.
Salem State took the lead in the bottom of the first as four hits brought in three runs. However, the Diplomats battled back in the top of the second.
Nick DiGiacomo worked a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later,
Owen Woodward roped an RBI-double into left field to reduce the deficit to two. After
Vincent Mariniello got hit by a pitch,
Nolan McCloskey legged out an infield single to the shortstop. As the throw went to first, Woodward raced home and beat the tag to get F&M within a run.
Michael von Zuben kept the rally alive with a single through the left side of the infield to score Mariniello and tie the game. An error in the Salem State infield allowed McCloskey to cross the plate to give Franklin & Marshall the lead, 4-3.
The Diplomats added a run in the top of the third as DiGiacomo led off the frame with a single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt from
Nick Lorenzo put the F&M right fielder into scoring position as an RBI-single from Woodward gave the Diplomats a 5-3 cushion.
Salem State got a run back in the bottom of the seventh to reduce its deficit to 5-4. In the top of the ninth, Mariniello ripped a one-out double down the left field line. Two batters later, von Zuben brought the sophomore home on an RBI-single to extend the F&M lead to 6-4.
