CENTER VALLEY, PA - Forward Brandon Corday (Fr., Morton Grove, IL/Niles Township) finished a long pass from midfielder Jose Caballe (Jr., Pittsburgh, PA/Kiski School) and beat goalie Dennis Kelly with a shot 24 seconds into the second overtime period as #6 seed Franklin & Marshall College defeated #3 seed DeSales University 2-1 (2OT) in the opening round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Region Men's Soccer Championship Tournament.
The Diplomats never trailed in the game as back Dan Mills (Sr., Hershey, PA/Hershey) converted on a free kick from 45 yards out at 57:40 for a 1-0 lead following a scoreless first half. DeSales responded at 80:22 as Randy Sturm finished a free kick from Phil Yetter to knot the game at 1-1 and force overtime.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first 10 extra minutes of play to force a second overtime period before Caballe connected with Corday for the game-winner at the 100:24 mark.
The two teams traded shots freely as both teams recorded 20 shots with five corner kicks.
In goal, Ed Stelz (So., Kew Gardens, NY/Loomis Chaffee) made seven saves to record his 11th win of the season, while Kelly recorded six saves.
Franklin & Marshall advances to play #7 seed Wesley at 3:00 p.m. on November 13 at Swarthmore College as the Wolverines upset #2 seed McDaniel 1-0 in overtime. The game will mark the second meeting of the year between the two teams as F&M shutout Wesley 3-0 on September 22 at Baker Field.
Overall, #8 Washington & Jefferson defeated #1 Penn State-Altoona 1-0 and #4 Swarthmore handled #5 Lebanon Valley 4-1 to earn hosting rights. The Garnet will take to the field at 1:00 p.m. on November 13 versus #8 Washington & Jefferson.
The winners of the semifinal contests will advance to the title match to be held at 1:00 p.m. on November 14 at Swarthmore College.
