LANCASTER, PA -- Bas Solleveld (Sr., Glenmoore, PA/Shipley) scored six goals, including two in the fourth quarter, as the Franklin & Marshall College men's lacrosse team downed Swarthmore 12-6 in Centennial Conference action.
Trailing 1-0 following a bounce score by Tim Chryssikos 20 seconds into the game, Solleveld knotted the score with 13:28 left in the first quarter by beating Swarthmore goalie Steven Isbister. Franklin & Marshall took the lead less than three minutes later as Mike Down (Fr., Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) completed a feed from Steve Welsh (Jr., Lewes, DE/Cape Henelopen) for a 2-1 lead with 10:54 left in the period.
The Garnet tied the score at 2-2 exactly six minutes following Down's goal as Chryssikos bounced a shot in front of the cage which angled up and under the cross bar at the 4:54 mark.
Solleveld responded with a shot that bounced up and over the right shoulder of Isbister for a 3-2 lead with 1:45 left in the first period.
F&M increased the lead to two goals 54 seconds into the second quarter as Chris Wathey (Sr., South Huntington, NY/St. Anthony's) ripped a shot through traffic which found the back of the goal at the 14:54 mark. However, Swarthmore pulled to within a score as Chryssikos completed a hat trick at 6:37 as Franklin & Marshall entered the locker-room with a 4-3 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Swarthmore scored first to tie the game as Ryan McKenna caromed a shot into the cage at 14:45 for a 4-4 tie. Franklin & Marshall countered with goals at 12:10 and 10:12 by Wathey and Solleveld to retake the lead at 6-4.
Knotted at 4-4, Wathey circled the cage and fired a shot over the right shoulder of Isbister for a 5-4 lead. Next, Solleveld blasted a shot from just inside the box that Isbister did not respond to for a 6-4 lead and a hat trick.
Swarthmore closed the margin back to a goal at 4:50 as Tom Coughlin scored to trail 6-5, but Solleveld added his fourth goal of the game with a long shot from outside for a 7-5 lead with 2:45 left in the third quarter.
Again, Swarthmore closed to within a goal as Joseph DeSimone scored a man-up goal with 14.6 seconds left in the third quarter to trail 7-6 entering the final 15 minutes of play.
However, the fourth quarter was all F&M as the Diplomats scored five goals while blanking the Garnet for the 12-6 win.
Following a Swarthmore shot, the Diplomats moved the ball up the wing before Welsh found Kohl in front for a pass-and-shoot opportunity which Kohl buried for an 8-6 lead with 12:27 left on the game clock.
Solleveld tacked on back-to-back goals at 11:23 and 10:48 as he finished a pass from Welsh for a 9-6 lead before blasting a long-distance shot into the net for a 10-6 margin.
The Diplomats added the finish touches to the game over the final nine minutes of play as Wathey tallied a score off an assist from Cyrus Adams (Fr., Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell) for an 11-6 lead. F&M finished out the scoring 87 seconds later as Sean Duffy (So., Springfield, PA/Archmere Academy) registered an assist as he fired a shot which glanced off JB Robichau (Jr., Edgartown, MA/Tabor) and past Isbister with 7:59 remaining on the clock for the final score.
Between the pipes, F&M goalie Mike Sartorius (Jr., Summit, NJ/Summit) finished with 16 saves on 35 Swarthmore shots over 58 minutes before being relieved by Will McIntire (Jr., Arlington, VA/Taft) who did not face a shot over the final two minutes of play. For Swarthmore, Isbister made 12 saves on 33 shots by the Diplomats.
Franklin & Marshall (9-3, 4-2 CC) will continue the season on April 28 at McDaniel College in the final regular season away game of the year. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
