LANCASTER, PA -- Alex Shuptar (So., Philadelphia, PA/Kents Hill) scored on a penalty shot at the 60:38 mark for the winning score as the Franklin & Marshall College men's soccer team shutout Wesley College 3-0 in non-conference action.
The shutout continues a streak of 290 minutes of scoreless soccer by Franklin & Marshall at home on Baker Campus Field as the Diplomats have not been scored on since Gettysburg's David Pone tallied the deciding goal with 46 seconds left in regulation in a 2-1 victory by the Bullets on October 11, 2003.
Since that game, the Diplomats played to a 0-0 tie in double overtime with Washington College on October 20, 2003 and shutout the University of Scranton 5-0 on September 8, 2004 as goaltender Ed Stelz (So., Kew Gardens, NY/Loomis Chaffee) has made 16 saves during the shutout streak.
Against the Wolverines, the Diplomats came alive in the second half to put Wesley away as Shuptar beat goaltender Edward Hunt with a rising shot for the deciding goal 15:38 into the second half.
The team padded the lead exactly 11 minutes later as Dan Mills (Sr., Hershey, PA/Hershey) dished a pass to Chris Walters (Fr., Winslow, ME/Winslow) who buried a shot past Hunt for a 2-1 lead at 71:38.
Franklin & Marshall tacked on another goal at 75:11 as Brandon Corday (Fr., Morton Grove, IL/Niles Township) launched a cross to Ryan McGonigle (Fr., Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) who finished the pass for the 3-0 final.
In goal, Stelz made six saves to earn his second win and shutout of the season, while Hunt stopped five shots in the loss.
Franklin & Marshall College (2-2-1, 0-1 CC) will put its home shutout streak on the line on September 24 versus Haverford. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
