Johns Hopkins Stuns Franklin & Marshall 3-1 in Centennial Conference Field Hockey Playoffs

BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins University's Leah Horton put back a loose ball in front of the cage 12:29 into the game for the game-winning score as the #4 seed Blue Jays built a 3-0 first half lead to defeat #5 seed Franklin & Marshall 3-1 in the first round of the Centennial Conference field hockey playoffs.

The Blue Jays (10-8, 6-4 Centennial Conference) advance to face-off with #2 nationally ranked and #1 seed Ursinus College at 11:00 a.m. on November 5 in Collegeville, while #2 seed Gettysburg (13-5, 9-1 CC) will take on #3 McDaniel (11-6, 7-3 CC) at 1:30 at Ursinus.

Hopkins made it to the semifinals behind a two goal outburst in the first half as Meighan Roose scored off a penalty corner as she fired a shot from 10 yards out through traffic for a 1-0 lead 5:42 into the game.

Dudley and Horton connected less than seven minutes later to put the Blue Jays in front 2-0 before halftime.

The first half was all Blue Jays as Hopkins out shot Franklin & Marshall 10-1, held an 8-1 advantage in penalty corners and put eight shots on goal to the Diplomats' one.

Hopkins iced the win four minutes into the second half as Jamie Zubrow finished a pass from Sarah Bender at 39:34 for a 3-0 lead.

Franklin & Marshall attempted to rally as Lindsey Mummert (Jr., New Oxford, PA/New Oxford) scored off an assist from Brittany Croll (Sr., Lewes, DE/Indian River) at 49:23, but the JHU defense and goalie Dayna Eng hold off 13 Franklin & Marshall shots in the second half to hold on for the win.

Croll's assist marked her ninth of the season and 23rd of her career as she tied Becky Orr '87 (23) for the program's career record. For her career, she now has 52-23-127 to rank as the program's all-time leader in points (52-23-127) and tie for second in goals with Sue Bowen '80 (52) after scoring 16-9-41 this season.

Overall, the Diplomats out shot Hopkins 13-9, held an 8-3 advantage in penalty corners and put nine shots on goal to Hopkins' five in the second half.

In goal, Eng made nine saves to earn the win, while F&M's Michelle Altman (Sr., Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) made 10 saves, including five in the second half, in the loss.

Franklin & Marshall (12-6, 6-4 Centennial Conference) will now await word from the NCAA and the Eastern College Athletic Conference regarding possible bids to the organizations' postseason tournaments.

On November 6, the NCAA will announce the national championship bracket as the Diplomats could receive an at-large bid. On November 7, the ECAC will announce selections to the organization's eight team South Region championship tournament.
